2 Companies To Make Gear For Phoning Over Internet

August 24, 2004

By Matt Richtel

Linksys and Netgear, two competing providers of home networking equipment, plan to announce today that they are entering the business of making equipment used to place telephone calls over the Internet, according to industry executives.

In both cases, Linksys and Netgear plan to announce that they are selling equipment designed specifically for use by Vonage, a start-up company that has become a pioneer in providing so-called Internet telephony.

Phone Industry Faces Upheaval As Ways Of Calling Change Fast

August 25, 2004

By Ken Brown and Almar Latour

In just over a year, one out of every eight households in the Portland, Maine, region has signed up for Internet phone service supplied by Time Warner Inc.'s cable-television unit. For many, the phone jack in the wall that connects to the phone company's network is now just a useless hole. Time Warner is rolling out the same service to millions of consumers nationwide.

It's one more sign of a telecommunications upheaval that's unfolding at warp speed. And it isn't good news for Bell phone companies such as Verizon Communications Inc., which through its predecessors has controlled local phone service in the Northeast since the start of the 20th century. Already, Verizon's traditional phone lines are down by nine million, or 16%, since the end of 2000, according to research firm Precursor Group.

Vonage Reveals Deal On Router

August 25, 2004

By Paul Taylor

Vonage, the US-based broadband voice over internet protocol pioneer, yesterday announced deals with two equipment companies designed to make it easier for consumers to switch to VoIP services.

As part of the agreement, Linksys, the home networking equipment maker owned by Cisco, and rival Netgear will both offer new "converged" devices that combine the technology needed to set up a wired or Wi-Fi wireless home network and a VoIP broadband phone connection in one box.

Don't Make The Babies Cry

August 25, 2004

By Bill Mann

We're dueling over the telecom industry on Fool.com. Bill Mann says the Baby Bells are beset by far too many obstacles to make a compelling investment, while Ben McClure disagrees. Read both articles, and then vote for which argument you think is better.

Here's what I'm looking for: I want an industry that has to spend in the hundreds of millions to rebuild its facilities again in a race with competitors. I want an industry that has to fight regulators tooth and nail when newer, more nimble competitors can demand to use its facilities at cost. I want an industry that has a core product threatened by better technology, that has seen declining revenue per unit for decades, that once could offer its product on a monopoly basis, but now has competitors offering comparable-to-superior products at same-to-better prices using different technologies.

Not Your Parents' Phone System

August 25, 2004

By Staff

Guess who is the biggest voice over IP service provider in the US?

You probably said Vonage, which has roughly 200,000 paying customers. Wrong. There's another company with more than four times the subscribers delivering voice capability over broadband. It's a company you've probably heard of, though not in this context.

Vonage Doubles Its Money

August 25, 2004

By Richard Shim

The Edison, N.J., company announced the funding Wednesday and added that it has raised about $208 million in total.

Vonage's service allows telephone calls to be made over a broadband Internet connection using VoIP, voice over Internet Protocol. Operating on the Internet frees the service from government regulations and lessens the cost of phone service for consumers.
