Vonage Dials Up $105M

VOIP competition reached another all-time high today as Vonage Holdings Corp. announced it has closed a $105 million Series D funding round, bringing its total funding to date to $208 million.

The company says its financing will be used to speed the expansion of its service in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., the Pacific Rim, and Latin America (see Vonage Plans Q4 Launch in UK ). With more than 240,000 lines in service, Vonage says it continues to add more than 25,000 lines per month to its network (see Residential VOIP Will Boom, Says Study ). At the end of 2003, it had about 87,500 lines in service, according to Vonage CFO John Rego.

Vonage said today it is teaming with NETGEAR (NTGR) to develop a suite of broadband telephony devices.

The devices will incorporate the latest version of Texas Instruments' Voice over IP and Wireless LAN chipsets, enabling consumers to benefit from integrated broadband voice and data applications compatible with the Vonage service.

EDISON, NJ -- Vonage, a leading broadband phone company, today announced Staples as the first national office supply chain to offer Vonage services in all of its approximately 1,200 stores throughout the United States and online at http://www.staples.com.

High-speed Internet customers, who have a standard telephone, can sign up for Vonage service by purchasing one of two Vonage starters kit at Staples, both featuring Linksys devices. Either device will allow customers to make unlimited calls in the U.S. and Canada for one low, flat monthly rate starting at $14.99.

Linksys Enters Consumer VoIP Market With Vonage

San Jose, Calif. — Linksys announced it will enter the consumer VoIP market in conjunction with service provider Vonage, with the shipment this month of two Linksys VoIP products bundled with Vonage service to dealers.

The Linksys products include the PAP2 Phone Adapter for a suggested $59 and the RT31P2 Broadband Router for a suggested $89. Both are equipped with two standard telephone jacks, support session initiation protocol (SIP), and are compatible with a cable or DSL broadband Internet modems.

Vonage today announced it is teaming with Netgear, Inc. to develop a suite of broadband telephony devices. These devices will incorporate the latest version of Texas Instruments’ Voice over IP (VoIP) and Wireless LAN (WLAN) chipsets, enabling consumers to benefit from integrated broadband voice and data applications compatible with the Vonage service. First available will be a voice-enabled 802.11g wireless router followed by a wired two-port telephone adapter/router. These products are expected to be available to customers of Vonage’s innovative digital telephone service as early as October of this year in time for the Holiday season.

Cisco Systems' Linksys division is set to enter the consumer VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) space this week through a deal with Vonage Holdings to provide customer equipment for that company's Internet-based telephone service.

The partnership will kick off with Linksys providing broadband-to-phone adapters and wired routers that incorporate that adapter technology, but it soon will branch out with Wi-Fi equipment and could lead to wireless LAN phones, according to representatives of the two companies.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Internet phone service Vonage on Tuesday said it has struck a deal with Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to sell Vonage-ready equipment at hundreds of retail stores in a bid to boost new subscriptions.

Vonage also said it was working with Netgear Inc. (NTGR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to develop a line of Internet phone equipment, including a device that combines its phone service with wireless networking.
