VoIP firm Vonage has joined with Cisco Systems subsidiary Linksys and Netgear in an alliance to boost use of the Internet for voice phone calls. The partnership with Netgear includes the launch of a voice-enabled 802.11g (Wi-Fi) wireless router and a wired two-port telephone adapter/router.

Internet phone service provider Vonage has hooked up with Cisco Systems and Netgear to sell equipment that supports the company's Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), with an eye on increasing its subscriber numbers in a competitive market.

Linksys, Vonage Connect On VoIP
Protocol Service Available Through Wi-Fi Equipment Made By Linksys

August 24, 2004

By Richard Shim

Vonage will announce the Linksys partnership Tuesday. The move comes after a deal with Netgear. Vonage's broadband telephony service will be available with two of Linksys' products, a router and a phone adapter. Both products are immediately available.

The $59 Linksys Phone Adapter plugs into Wi-Fi equipment, such as a router, and allows a consumer to connect a phone to the broadband connection to make VoIP calls. The $89 Broadband Router includes two phone ports, which would allow two phones to place VoIP calls at once.

Linksys, Netgear To Offer VoIP At Home

August 24, 2004

By Eric Griffith

Home routers have long been only useful to computers, acting as a "splitter" for the broadband connection (DSL or cable modem) so it can be shared by all the PCs. Soon, however, you'll be able to plug in your phone and use that same broadband connection to make cheap phone calls.

Today two of the leaders in home networking equipment, Netgear (Quote, Chart) and Linksys (a division of Cisco Systems (Quote, Chart)) both announced plans to build phone jacks into wired and wireless equipment. Those jacks will provide an instant link to the commercial voice over IP network run by Vonage of Edison, N.J.

Broadband Phone Services
The Telephone Meets The Internet

August 24, 2004

By Kevin Savetz

Online addicts used to want an extra phone line to access the Internet. Today, the Internet can replace your telephone entirely. With a broadband phone service, you can make and receive calls using a phone without any assistance from your Baby Bell. Instead, the phone plugs into your Internet connection.

You need two things to turn your broadband connection into a personal phone line: a subscription to an Internet telephone service and a compatible phone. You can use a special SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) phone or regular phone plugged into a VoIP (Voice over IP) gateway. A SIP phone resembles a traditional phone but has a USB connector to plug into your computer or a 10Base-T connector to plug into your router. A VoIP gateway connects between your router and standard phone. This is convenient if you want to use a cordless phone or your light-up Hello Kitty model. Some gateways have two ports to which you might connect a phone and fax machine. Some services claim to work with fax; others don’t guarantee success. (Faxing worked with all the services I tested.)
