Vonage: $105 Million Boost To Expansion Plans

August 26, 2004

By Staff

VoIP service provider Vonage plans to use the huge funding round to roll out its services overseas in pursuit of its ambition to become a billion dollar business. While the firm has enjoyed rapid growth recently, there are a number of regulatory and competitive clouds on the horizon.

Canada, the Pacific rim, the UK and Latin America are amongst Vonage's target markets and it goes onto the attack against legacy phone service providers overseas using the same business model that has built up its user base to more than 240,000 lines in the US. It claims to be adding 25,000 users every month.

 Vonage doubled its venture capital

Vonage In Print News

Venture Market Summary

August 26, 2004

By Scott Austin

Vonage, a company that enables customers to make phone calls using a touch-tone phone over an Internet connection, undoubtedly ruffled a few feathers Tuesday in the traditional phone business.

Vonage doubled its venture capital backing with a $105 million Series D round, as investors race to pour money in a space with no clear leader and ripe for competition. Lead investor New Enterprise Associates injected $40 million to make it the company's second largest shareholder, under founder and technology pioneer Jeffrey Citron; 3i said Vonage is now the firm's largest U.S. investment; and Meritech Capital Partners claimed its investment is one of the largest deals in the fund's history.

A Price War Hits Internet Calling
Competition And Low Cost Of Service Spur Array Of Deals In Nascent Telecom Sector

August 26, 2004

By ShawnYoung

Fierce price competition is hitting the fast-growing Internet phone-calling business.

Consumers are used to prices of many new technologies eventually falling. But with Internet phone calls, the industry has begun to lower its rates at a remarkably early stage, reflecting the low cost of providing the service and the cutthroat nature of the phone business.

AT&T Corp. recently extended an introductory offer of $19.95 a month for its CallVantage service, which offers unlimited local and long-distance calling, through the end of September. Earlier, Vonage Holdings Corp., the pioneer in Internet calling, shaved $5 off the price of its primary service, which is now $29.99 a month.

How to Make Phone Calls Online

August 29, 2004

By Joab Jackson

E-mailing your best pal in Thailand or family in Toledo is cheaper than running up a long-distance phone bill. But even brimming with smiley emoticons, text messages lack a certain personal touch. Good news: You can now reach out and touch someone -- by phone -- using your high-speed Net connection.

A crop of new "Internet telephony," or voice-over-IP (VoIP), services allow you to connect your phone directly to your DSL or cable line instead of to the public telephone network, dramatically shrinking bills if you're a big-time long-distance user (imagine calling France for 5 cents a minute, or half the typical rate). Plus, telephony provides nifty Web-based features unavailable with regular phones; in addition to getting voice mail and caller ID, you can select your own area code and even take your phone number with you, for example.

Here's how to set yourself up:

Wait Till Next Year
Not So Ga-Ga Over Google? This Season's IPOs Left You Cold? Cheer Up -- 2005 Looks Hotter

August 30, 2004

By Constance Loizos

THE TERM "INITIAL PUBLIC OFFERING" has this year become almost synonymous with one company: Google. While the klieg lights still shine on the much-obsessed-about search engine that just went public, venture capitalists already are pondering the IPO class of 2005. With good reason. That class could be much stronger than this year's.

Many of its members boast virtues frequently absent from companies entering the public arena. Some have recurring -- and growing -- revenue streams. Most have solid, experienced management teams. And some are even profitable, or at least nearly so.

In fact, many outfits that could float initial offerings next year have more compelling stories than other companies already trading on Nasdaq.

Vonage VOIP Phone To Run Over Wi-Fi Networks

August 30, 2004

By Carmen Nobel

Small businesses mapping out WLAN strategies will soon have another alternative to consider, as broadband telephony provider Vonage Holdings Corp. makes its way into the industry with its own hardware and through partnerships with Linksys and Netgear Inc.

Vonage last week announced plans to release by year's end a VOIP (voice-over-IP) phone that runs over Wi-Fi networks. While initial plans call for targeting home- and small-office customers, Vonage will eventually serve international business travelers.
