Starter Kit Deal

September 1, 2004

By Staff

Vonage, the New Jersey provider of Internet-based telephone service, has reached a deal to sell its starter kits at 700 Office Depot stores, the companies plan to announce today.

The announcement is the latest in a string of distribution deals for Vonage, which serves more than 200,000 customers in the United States, a figure that has grown rapidly but is still only a fraction of the tens of millions of people using traditional phone service.

Latest Generation Of Service Provider Routers Enable Carriers To Address Profit Woes; Synergy Research Group's Latest Report Forecasts Service Provider Routers To Increase To $7.7 Billion Dollars By 2009

September 2, 2004

By Staff

Synergy's latest report "Q2 2004 Worldwide Router Forecast Report" is predicting Service Provider Routers will reach 52.3% of total Router revenue by the end of 2004. Carriers quickly moving to build their networks around IP will drive this change in the mix of Router sales. The rapid ascent of companies like Vonage represents a loud wake up call to Carriers -- it is imperative for Service Providers to understand the "network economics" of a bit or a packet and how best to leverage IP technology to address concerns of competitiveness and profitability.

Such strategic planning by the Carriers is driving the deployment of highly-functional networking devices such as IP Edge Routers, which SRG is forecasting to grow to a quarter of all Router sales by 2005 and further to represent a third of all Router sales by 2009. Cisco, Juniper, Nortel, Redback and Riverstone are in very strong positions to benefit from these capital investments. What's more, technological requirements continue to change rapidly, thus creating windows of opportunity for innovative start-ups.

Vonage VoIP Service

August 23, 2004

By Mathew Ingram

As catch-phrases go, Voice Over Internet Protocol or VOIP doesn't exactly sing, which is why so few companies offering it tend to use either the term or the acronym. What they usually say is things like "Use the Internet to make phone calls!" and leave it at that.

It's more than a little confusing, since people have been using the Internet to make phone calls for years now. So what's new about a service such as Vonage? And is it any good?

Internet Talk Is Cheap, But What People Really Want To Know Is, How Does It Sound?

August 16, 2004

By William Mauldin

Internet talk is cheap, but what people really want to know is, how does it sound? So we decided to give VoIP a real test, going beyond the usual method of just making a few sample calls.

Using an industry-approved method, we had six volunteers rate more than 100 calls over four VoIP lines, one landline and one cellular phone on a scale of 1 to 5. The tests were blind, of course, and we took the mean opinion score to come up with our results.

To our surprise, one of the Internet services actually beat the landline, something few experts had expected. Two of the other services had noticeably more glitches, like calls that went in and out of service or calls that had a few syllables chopped out here and there. Not exactly what you want for a business call.

Cisco, NetGear Deals Boost Vonage's Reach

August 25, 2004

By Staff

Vonage Holdings Corp., which claims to own half of the US residential voice over IP services market, is ramping up its retail channel with OEM and distribution deals with Cisco Systems Inc. and NetGear Inc., announced yesterday.

CFO John Rego told ComputerWire the firm is rolling out a "multiple CPE [customer premises equipment] manufacturer strategy". The company once used Cisco, switched to Motorola last year, and now has added NetGear and Cisco-owned Linksys.

Vonage Awash In Venture Capital

August 25, 2004

By Colin C. Haley

VoIP (define) upstart Vonage has quickly amassed another $105 million from venture capitalists and is looking to Latin America and Asia to accelerate an already torrid growth rate.

For most of its existence, Vonage founder Jeff Citron, a serial entrepreneur who previously ran online brokerage Datek, has bankrolled the company. But investors have taken notice, pumping $200 million into Vonage's coffers in four rounds. And New Enterprise Associates re-upped its commitment to Vonage, contributing another $40 million.

Vonage Deals With Linksys, Netgear and Staples

Vonage In Print News

Welcome Home

August 25, 2004

By Vince Vittore

Any doubt that the demarcation point sitting on the side of most residential customers' homes is anything more than an arbitrary line should be wiped away with Vonage's announcement that it has struck up partnerships with two vendors and one retail giant.

The deals Vonage has consummated with Linksys, Netgear and Staples are another baby step forward in the long-term seismic shift occurring in the voice/broadband business. While the two vendor relationships give users another couple of choices for premises equipment, the ability to buy service through Staples stores alters the traditional service delivery route.
