Equipment Resellers

September 20, 2004

By Erika D. Smith

Convergence

It's the latest buzz word in almost every industry.

It sounds good. (Using words with three or more syllables can make people seem intelligent.) It feels good to say. (``We're a company that's moving toward convergence'' -- kind of like, ``We're a solutions-oriented business.'' Pun intended.)

But in truth, few employers actually know what convergence means, what its benefits are or what it takes to achieve it. Adopting Internet telephone service may be the first step to figuring that out.

In the simplest terms, voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, is an alternative to conventional phone service. It works by turning voice calls into data packets and sending them over the Web. When the packets approach their destination, they are reassembled and delivered in the form of a traditional call.

No Need For Dickensian Approach To Voice-Via-Web

September 20, 2004

By Michael Geist

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Although Dickens wrote his oft-quoted novel, A Tale Of Two Cities, in the 19th century, his words resonate with prescient timeliness today. Consider the story of a technology that allows customers to by-pass traditional distribution channels with unlimited, low cost communication.

While many recognized the enormous power and potential of the Internet when it first burst onto the public's radar screen in the mid-1990s, it has been the emergence of peer-to-peer technologies that have proven particularly disruptive.

VoIP Goes Big Business

September 20, 2004

By Staff

A growing portion of international business calling traffic is being carried over IP.

At the end of 2003 only 2.5% of business lines were operating over IP, which is approximately 10 million lines. But according to new data from IDATE, by 2009 corporate voice over IP and telephony over IP (VoIP and ToIP) will account for 40% of business telephone lines, or 180 million lines. That will mean close to one-third of classic analog and ISDN lines will disappear.

IDATE predicts that IP business calls will exceed 50% of all business traffic by 2010.

Vonage said it now offers Mexico City virtual numbers to U.S. and Canadian customers for 4.99 per month. It said such numbers "make it less expensive for friends, relatives and business professionals residing and working in Mexico... to make calls to the U.S. and Canada."

Canada Sizes Up VOIP Regulation

September 20, 2004

By Ellen Muraskin

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on Tuesday begins a three-day hearing on the regulation of VOIP (voice over IP) services, finding itself at a crossroads familiar to the parallel organizations of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the European Commission.

A total of 33 parties, including major, incumbent Canadian telcos Bell Canada Enterprises Inc. and Telus Corp., will present their positions, hoping to sway the CRTC from a preliminary opinion.

Internet Search Sites Win Bulk Of Online Ad Spending

By Eric Chabrow

Spending on Internet search ads is approaching $1 billon a quarter, representing $4 of every $10 spent on online advertisements, according to a report issued Monday by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Advertisers allotted 40% of their online ad budgets--or $947 million--to search ads in the April to June period. That's up from $481 million in second quarter 2003, which then represented 29% of online ad budgets.

Up In The Air

September 20, 2004

By Glenn Fleishman

I’m flying with Boeing right now: This post is filed from the Connexion by Boeing test plane flying out of Boeing Field just north of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. I’m on board with a number of journalists who are getting this demo flight today. The views are spectacular. I had no idea one could fly that close to Mt. Rainier.

The service has been working terrifically when the link is up—there were a few problems with the connection because of the short duration of the flight, our elevation, and the turns necessary to keep us within a large circle. The test plane is swank—a 737-400 with all first-class seating—but the service is the same on this flight as on the several planes on two routes of Lufthansa service. (Note: I missed the cutoff on the approach and wasn’t able to post this during the flight; I added more detail below and posted a couple of hours later.)

Is There An Internet-Based WLAN Portable Phone In Your Future?

September 20, 2004

By Al Senia

Quite possibly, if you spend your time on a college campus, you’re a technological savvy international traveler or you just spend a lot of time in a somewhat insulated, hot-wired environment.

Wireless LAN platforms emerged from the shadows this week when VoIP pioneer Vonage and Texas Instruments jointly announced at the Broadband World Forum in Italy that they are working on an integrated platform to develop a high-performance wireless LAN IP phone. The device would combine VoIP and WLAN software that would bring WLAN IP phones to market for residential and enterprise users.

Hearing Set On Voice-Over-Internet

September 20, 2004

By Staff

Is it possible to change a regulator’s mind in 30 minutes?

That’s roughly how long Bell Canada will have this week to convince the federal telephone watchdog that the emerging world of VOIP—that is, phone service based on Internet protocol—is so disruptive and fast-moving that it isn’t fair to slap regulatory shackles on Ma Bell.

Tomorrow, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission begins a three-day hearing in Ottawa to determine how such an industry-transforming technology can and can’t be sold to Canadians.

CRTC Begins Studying How To Oversee VoIP

September 21, 2004

By Simon Tuck

Ottawa — The possible regulation of on-line telephone services will be on the table in a review that begins Tuesday by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, hearings that could help shape the direction of Canada's telecommunications industry — and the commission itself.

The CRTC is poised to determine how — or if — it will regulate the fledgling voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) industry, which has the potential to slash telephony prices, attract a horde of new Internet users, and lead to an overhaul of the lucrative telecommunications services industry.
