Post subject: Number transfer
It has been 4 months, and my phone numbers still have not been transferred. I have called
Vonage
, and they blame it on the 3rd party they contract with to do number transfers for them. How patient should I be??

I would complain to
Vonage
that it's costing you money maintaining two accounts (they may offer to give you a break on the
Vonage
costs). I would also submit an on-line complaint with the FCC (form 475)
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints.html.
I just went through this with them. The screwed up the first first transfer attempt so they give me a free month. After they resubmitted the trasfer it took 31 business days for transfer to happen. I made an FCC complaint after 20 business days.
Good luck
Hal

I would also suggest filing a complaint with the FCC. I started my transfer on 1/8/2004, and it is now 10/14/2004, it is still not completed.
I filed a complaint with the FCC and it really is important that you do this.
I spoke with the FCC again today, and they told me that Vonage/Focal has *never* returned their phone calls regarding this matter.
I currently have U.S. Cellular and when I started the transfer (which I didn't know), Focal Communication (one of the companies that does
Vonage
Transfers), did not have a porting agreement with U.S. Cellular. I found this out 4 months after the transfer. They do have one now, my number was suppose to be transfered last month, but Focal would not send "complete information" and the transfer could not take place. My transfer is actually suppose to happen today. I think it is important if to get the FCC complaint filed, since they can get you information that you probably couldn't get on your own.

Not to discourage you, but look at this:
Updated Date: Number Transfer Progress History:
January 7, 2004 Awaiting Letter of Authorization
January 7, 2004 Letter of Authorization (LOA) Received
January 8, 2004 Transfer Sent to Carrier
October 15, 2004 Carrier Approved Transfer
October 15, 2004 Completed LNP Transfer
I have become an expert on this porting stuff, here is what I learned:
- file a complaint with the FCC, they will get your existing phone company involved. The existing phone company will try real hard and give you lots of information that
Vonage
will not.
- According to the FCC,
Vonage
has never returned their phone calls.
- Before starting a port, find out if there is a porting agreement between your existing phone company and Focal Communications (or one of the other 3rd party companies that
Vonage
uses). It costs $15,000 for the two companies to sign a porting agreement, so they may string you along, until enough people are waiting to start the process. I would bet that anyone transferring from US Cellular to
Vonage
right now, would take days vs. 9 months.
- Make sure that your first and last name are spelled identically at your previous phone company and
Vonage
. If there is a mispelling, change
Vonage
, NOT your existing phone company
- Keep a complete log/history of who you talk too.
- after the transfer is complete, demand a credit from
Vonage
, for every day after the 20th business day - which they quote on their web site as how long it takes to port a number.

Thanks for the tips Michael1963. I'm attempting to transfer my # so if it doesn't happen within 3 weeks I'll probably file a complaint with the FCC since it worked so well for you.
I'm transfering it from Bell South, so hopefully it won't take too long to do it. I have transfered my # to & from a 3rd party service back to Bell South and it didn't seem to take a long time before. Hopefully this time it won't take a while also.
Just out of curiousity, how many people here have tried to transfer their # and how long did it take?
