Need some information. I have changed ISPs and now my router does not work. I have gone from Earthlink DSL to RoadRunner Cable.
The router will recognize when I use the DSL, but when using the cable ISP I have a strange occurrence. The ethernet card light on my laptop will brink to indicate a connection for about 5 times; and then goes off.
If I check the connection, I have an ISP address but cannot connect to the internet.
To attempt to figure this out, I have reset the router, with negative results. Also, have unplugged and reconnected the modem.
I can take the cord from the modem to the router, and plug it back into the laptop and everything works.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance. |

Is your router still set up to use PPPoE? Cable doesn't use that, and most DSL does. |

When I went to reset the router, turned that off. Also have tried another router when "just plugs in", with the same result. |

"If I check the connection, I have an ISP address but cannot connect to the internet."
Could you clarify what you mean by that? How did you "check the connection"? Does the router get an IP address, or just the computer? |

Unknown if router received IP. When I check the log-in icon on the desktop, shows a IP address. |

Well, pull up the router webpage and see if it got an IP. |

Do you know if RoadRunner requires you to register your computer's MAC address?
If that is the case, then it might work if you turn on MAC cloning on the router. |

Houuser,
I don't have any experience with Netgear. Last week I switched from DSL back to RR and it took a couple of tries to get the router working correctly.
For your router I found this support page: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WGT624v2.asp
I would first try to power cycle everything. Shut down your computer, Unplug the router, and cable modem. Plug your ethernet cable directly into the cable modem then to your computer. You should have a live connection. Now plug the ethernet cable from the cable modem into port 1 of your router, and then use the other ethernet cable to connect the modem to the router.
^ That's pretty basic I'm sure you have that much figured out that out already.
Your router should preconfigure itself. If it doesn't. Your routers address is 192.168.0.1 By typing that into your address bar you should get to the routers config page. For your router the defaults are:
username: admin
password: password
In the router setup you should be able to select DHCP which is the protocol RR uses.
Hope I've help get your back on the 'net.
