sorry for the broken rambling, but here's what happened with me...
Put in a request with Verizon for a new line, actually as a new account because verizon cs reps said that would help avoid 'billing issues'
Waited a week for them to even acknowledge my order
Waiting another 2 weeks for Verizon to actually install the line
Put in a request to move my DSL service from the first number to the second
Waited another few weeks until the scheduled move date
2 days before the move was to take place they canceled the order because they said upon further review, my new line (at the same location) was not eligible for DSL
Meanwhile, the number actually successfully transferred to Vonage, even with DSL on the line!
The day of the transfer, there was no dialtone on the orginal line but DSL was still active, and all incoming calls to the number went to the Vonage phones - so I know it was technically possible for me to have a dry line
The next day the DSL was shut off too
Called verizon a couple of times, they had no idea why the DSL wouldnt be transferred, they called the engineers, they said the loop might be too long or something. Suggested I place another order- it "might go through this time" : 2 hours on the phone to tell me this
Since I didnt want to wait another month f'ing around with verizon just to be told they can't help me, i decided to get cable modem service with my local provider, Adelphia. I decided I pay too much to verizon each month for them to treat me like this. In fact, the whole reason I chose to go with Vonage in the first place is due a recurring issue of horrible line noise with our Verizon line. Sure, they would come out and fix it every time (after waiting a few weeks of course) but it would just happen again a few months later.
So, I bought the cable modem at CC on Friday and was online that following Monday. Everything is working just fine.
The lesson is: don't bother trying to work with Verizon to port your number and keep your DSL, it probably won't work and you'll have wasted your money and time.
