Salt Lake City: impressions after several months

Several months of the service, and here are my thoughts:

(1) The hat is nice

(2) Full phone functionality every time I've needed to take or make a call, with the exception of (3) below. I have noticed the phone light being off a couple of times on the router, just for a few moments.

(3) My router burnt out about 3 days into the service (just the phone circuit). This could have been due to my setting a paper on top of it absently, then discovering that it was hot. I work with electronic components all the time, should have known better. Anyway, my adventure with tech support began.

Between the poor connection to India (or wherever?) and Muhammad's accent (yes, that's what he said), I could understand perhaps 35% of the conversation. That was the big problem. He went over the usual power cycling stuff etc, and then I did the whole thing again with his supervisor. This is understandable, given that the process often solves problems when dealing with less technical people.

It became obvious that I indeed had a bad router when we tried to do some config, and received the response ";save failed";. The tech support guy droned on for some time telling me what they would do and what I should do. I barely caught that they would ship me a new router. I tried to tell him to e-mail me any instruction I might need, don't know what he heard, and finally just had to hang up while he was talking. At that point I just could not understand anything he was saying.

He did send e-mails. I was told to return the router. They gave me an RMA number. I shipped it off right away. Two days later, they e-mailed me a prepaid UPS shipping label as an attachment. Too late, I had already eaten the cost!

They billed my credit card $100 for the new router. I was a bit nervous about that, but they credited it back when they received the old router (in original box, with all associated stuff).

The big problem is obviously the unintelligible support. There needs to be either a very clean connection, or someone who speaks excellent English. Both problems at once are too much.

For now I will say, ";thumbs up";. The reliability and quality of the service have been first-rate after the initial problem.

John

My Score:

7 because of the poor standard of the service people. As this post says, they are difficult to understand on the phone (though easier if you are English rather than American, I suspect) and the answers they give to emailed questions are mostly boiler-plate or reveal that they have not understood what you asked. I''m sure that part of the problem is with Vonage management - they have not educated the service people properly - for example, they evidently don''t know that, in the UK at least, the Vonage Box is a Grandstream HT-701, so they keep giving answers that refer to the older type.
