In Atlanta, GA

I have been a Vonage subscriber for three days and so-far-so-good! Actually that should be so-far-so-great!

I live in Atlanta, GA (ITP East for the locals) and have BellSouth's aDSL Lite (256 d / 128 u) so I was a bit hesitant. I decided to give it a try and ordered the 500 minute plan for $14.99 plus tax. Too, I decided to purchase the phone adapter at the local Best Buy for $59.99 as they are offering a $50 rebate (the PAP2 model) until February, 2005.

Set up was performed and I was talikng on my new Voip service in under 10 minutes. It went a little something like this:

1) Unpacked the PAP2 device from the carton (after driving through the after-Christmas rush traffic...)

2) Logged onto and entered the MAC ID, selected the plan (500 min. plan for now), billing, etc.

3) Plugged the PAP2 device into my Linksys router (I have a Win XP & a Linux computer sharing the aDSL).

4) Plugged in a splitter into jack #1 and then two phones (one corded, one wireless).

5) Plugged in the AC

6) Waited about 45 seconds

7) Made my first successful Voip phone call from home!

All-inAll it was fairly painless (even for a computer Noobie like myself) and the voice quality is fine. I did discover that if I was surfing the web and talking on the phone at the same time the connection would periodically drop-out or give me that digital-phone sound although, thee called party said they never heard these defects.

Due to this I adjusted the Bandwidth Saver feature to the Normal setting (30Kbps) via the web-based Features page...waited about an hour for the change to take effect and found the quality to be about the same (on both ends) but, without the drop-offs, etc. : ) I imagine persons with more bandwidth will not really have this issue.

Here are the features I have played with so far:

Caller ID with Name &

Call-ID block (my number)

Call-Waiting disable (per call and globally)

7 digit (even though in Atlanta 10 digit dialing is standard, now!)

Voicemail (*123) as easy as the BellSouth VM service

International Call BEAUTIFULLY (just watch it carefully if you are on the 500 min plan)!

INSTANT on-line access to my phone records...calls show up within just a few minutes of their completion.

Incoming calls are free (for those of you interesting in the 500 minute plan) as well as to your Voice mail and to calls within your area code AND to other Vonage numbers (no matter their location...per the web site and my testing).

As I said before, I have BellSouth's DSL LIte service (256/128) and the Vonage VOIP works just fine. Too, I took it over to a friends house last night to try it out and discovered I was up and making calls 30 seconds after plugging into their router (they have cable internet).

So, for now (yup, just three days so far) I will recommend the service and soon my two teens will have their own line for far cheaper than BellSouth could offer. And who knows? Perhaps I'll be making the switch on our primary house phone.

I'll keep ya posted!
