  • Vonage is an ISP (Internet Service Provider) located in Homdel in the state of New Jersey, this company offers their services to their patrons all over the USA. In 2004 this company expanded their reach to offer their services to subscribers in Canada and the U.K. Basically an ISP, their main area of business revolves around internet telephony using VoIP (Voice over the Internet Protocol) and SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). One of the leading broadband phone companies of the US, Vonage is second only to Comcast as far as subscriber base is concerned. Unless you are a subscriber of Vonage, the traditional way of making an international call involves dialing the international number, preceded by the country and city code respectively on your fixed landline or mobile phone. While this effort may seem easy to the end user, the technology behind the same is complex. The call is routed from your local exchange to the main exchange of your city. From there the call is routed to the international gateway of your country, which connects your call to the international gateway of the recipient via undersea copper cables or satellite. Once it has reached the destination country, the signal is again routed through to the main exchange of the city and then finally routed via the recipient's local exchange to the recipient itself. The last action is known as `call termination'.

The entire process is complicated and requires lots of switching through various gateways. These systems require costly equipment apart from the satellite rental itself which is very costly, and the end cost is finally borne by the subscriber, making international phone calls a costly process. Vonage helps you to make extremely cheap calls using the VoIP technology. This technology uses your existing broadband connection and routes your call through the same. While many of you might have talked over the internet using chat clients like “Yahoo Chat”, that is a different technology. It demands that both the both persons making the call are sitting in front of their pc's which should be connected to the internet.

The services of Vonage initiate a call from a normal landline and routes it through the internet to the destination landline. Since one is already paying for their broadband connection, the only additional charges are the costs of purchasing the VoIP enabled phone, and a paltry charge for the call. One also needs an adapter that will help connect their phone to their router or modem. Alternatively one can also opt for a Vonage branded "VoIP router". To help avoid lags and jitters in the call, your broadband connection should support minimum upload speeds of 30kbps. It goes without saying that the quality of service of your ISP should be good.
