You have to use the vonage adapter (router or whatever you want to call it.)
Big difference between "adapter" and "router" You'll notice that in the current "product" offerings, the Motorola stuff is described as "phone adapter with router" while the d-link vta is "phone adapter" (the d-link vwr is "phone adapter with wireless router") To further confuse things, some of the connection diagrams vonage provides show "phone adapter with router" units used in conjunction with other routers. While this can work, you end up double-NATting things which is ugly. As others have suggested, I recommend selecting a non-vonage router that has all the features you need for your network (VoIP and non-VoIP uses) and then use a simple phone adapter like the VTA behind it. I also agree that one of the router features you'll need (for VoIP use of the network) is QOS. As an example of why I prefer discrete components, consider that "back in the day" the thing to have was a honking big do-everything entertainment center. FM radio, stereo turntable, TV, speakers all in one unit. But what happened when the TV went out? You were forced to fix it in order to keep the radio/turntable even though there were better TVs available by then. Mark

Yes, you'll need a "phone adapter". It's more than just a place to plug into. It
