Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 23, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Although we will publish a "year-end wrap-up Digest next Thursday, this will be our last "regular" edition of the year. My family, and I know many of yours, will be taking some well-deserved time off for Christmas!

In the news, we'll see how New Yorkers that were homebound by the subway strike could have used Vonage to get their calls forwarded from their office. We'll also read a review of Vonage and the Vonage-compatible Linksys PAP2 phone adapter written by someone who writes for a leading computing publication.  Because today is Friday, it's the day for our popular In The Blogs feature where we call attention to what the bloggers we read regularly are writing about Vonage.  We'll point you to a Vonage VoIP Forum thread from someone who would like to add additional calling capacity to his Vonage line.

Vonage(R) Endorses New National Emergency Number Association VoIP E911 Standard

Vonage Press ReleasesNENA's Just-Released i2 Solution to Guide Technical Implementation of E911 for VoIP Industry, Public Safety and Network Owners

HOLMDEL, N.J., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Vonage America, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp., announced today that it supports the National Emergency Number Association's (NENA) new interim/migratory (i2) technical standard for VoIP E911. With the approval of this new technical standard by NENA's Board of Directors on December 8, 2005, the VoIP community will be able to complete its already aggressive rollout schedule.

The release of the i2 technical standard is NENA's first major standard combining the new technology of Voice over the Internet and the existing Enhanced 911 (E911) system interface. The i2 technical standard enables VoIP providers to deliver full E911 service through the current E911 infrastructure. It is the first of a two part system overhaul effort surrounding IP that was started in 2003 and the first major E911 system design effort since its creation in the 1970's.
