Don't Let Phone Giants 'Ctrl' What You Get On The 'Net

Vonage In Print News

February 15, 2006

By Staff

In the history of great ideas, the Internet will surely rank near the top. In a relatively short time, it has made vast amounts of information searchable, sortable and readily available with a few key strokes.

Much of the Internet's appeal is that no one controls it in the way that, say, a grocery store decides which brands to stock. Within its virtual walls, a start-up such as MySpace or Craigslist can surge to prominence entirely on the power of an idea.

Now, some very old-school companies want to change all that. Using market dominance achieved through the relative scarcity of lines into people's homes, phone companies such as BellSouth, Verizon and AT&T are eyeing a system that would demand that operators of search engines, e-commerce sites and other Web applications pay them fees or be relegated to the slow lane.

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Speaking of "fast," we'll read about a road test of a Vonage-sponsored racecar yesterday. We'll also meet Member 23,000 of the Vonage Forum, and read his first post, as well as read a Vonage VoIP Forum thread on managing a connection between Vonage, a WRTP54G wireless broadband router and an iMac G5.

Internet Phone Service Proposed In Abington

Vonage In Print News

February 15, 2006

By Allan Stein

Town Manager Phillip L. Warren is proposing that town departments be upgraded to Internet voice communication service, a move that could reduce the yearly cost of standard telephone service by nearly half.

The town currently pays about $30,000 a year for municipal phone service with Verizon, Town Accountant Anthony V. Sulmonte said.

Warren said the town could save an estimated $1,000 each month if departments are switched from standard land-line service to state-of-the-art, Internet voice service by companies such as Vonage.

Canadian Phone-Sex Fans Steaming Up The Lines

Vonage In Print News

February 12, 2006

By Misty Harris

When it comes to sex, most Canadians are phoning it in. So finds a new survey of more than 1,000 adults across the country, 53 per cent of whom admit to having engaged in intimate phone conversations with a close friend or partner.

According to Decima Research, which conducted the survey for broadband phone company Vonage Canada, sexy phone exchanges are considered an important part of a long-distance relationship by 77 per cent of Canucks. Most steam up the wires with imagination (39 per cent), receptiveness (31 per cent), creativity (30 per cent), vocalization (25 per cent) and, in the case of tactile talkers, hands-free phones (20 per cent).

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Obviously, the big news of the day is Vonage's announcement they are going to become a publicly traded company. Given this news, I thought it would be very useful for me to point out the language you see when you visit our Vonage Forum Home Page:

"This Site is exclusively owned and operated by 4Sight Media LLC and is no way endorsed, sponsored, provided, owned or otherwise controlled by Vonage. For official information on Vonage Services please proceed to the Vonage website at: Vonage the Broadband Phone Company"

Additionally, there is a new CEO running the company on a day-to-day basis. We'll also go over interesting Vonage VoIP Forum threads about temperamental cordless phones and blinking routers.

Vonage(R) Now Provides Emergency 911 Service in Over 2500 Calling Centers

Vonage Press ReleasesVonage and PSAPs Continue Working Together to Turn Up E911 for Customers Across the Nation in Record Time

HOLMDEL, N.J., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Vonage Marketing, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp., a leading provider of broadband phone service, today announced that it has turned on emergency 911 service in over 2,500 PSAPs across the country. In less than one week, Vonage equipped an additional 125 calling centers, in close to 40 new counties, with 911 capabilities.

In June, the FCC gave Vonage, and all Internet-based phone service companies, 120 days to create an E911 system from scratch, and provide all of its customers, wherever they are in the U.S., with E911 service. In that amount of time, Vonage worked closely with local 911 centers, also known as Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), across the country to turn on E911 for as many customers as it could.
