 Leave The Internet Alone

Vonage In Print News

February 22, 2006

By Staff

The Internet is known as the information highway for good reason. Users can log on at will and travel to any site of their choosing. And along the way, they are likely to see more than a few billboards advertising this product or that. But now there's a movement afoot to turn the cyber highway into a toll road. Congress must not allow that to happen.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 21, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll see what the former head of the U.S. FCC thinks about whether net neutrality laws are needed to prevent big broadband providers from blocking or charging extra for services like Vonage to travel across their networks. We'll read a review from a major newspaper about why Vonage is more economical than other VoIP services. We'll also go over an interesting and detailed Vonage VoIP Forum thread about voice quality - and how you can diagnose voice quality issues and identify where the problem might be. There's also something very special about that thread- but you'll have to read on to tell what that is.

Net Neutrality (Or Back To The Future)

Vonage In Print News

February 21, 2006

By Mark Lloyd

The Senate is considering whether to limit the ability of high-speed Internet providers to restrict access to their networks. The need for such legislation arises from the determination by the Federal Communications Commission that advanced telecommunications services ("broadband") were not really telecommunications services, but were instead "information" services. As explained in a previous column, these semantics relieve broadband providers from the obligation to provide equal service to everyone who uses the system. This was called Common Carrier Regulation. Today the debate has been given the catchy term Net Neutrality.

Former FCC Chairman Powell: Net Neutrality 'Doing Great'

Vonage In Print News

February 20, 2006

By Paul Kapustka

BOULDER, Colo. -- Even as the debate about Network Neutrality heats up and spawns headline-grabbing rhetorical fury, the man who started it all -- former FCC chairman Michael Powell -- can kick back, relax, and say that his so-called Internet Freedoms are "doing great."

Two years removed and a few rows back from the same place where he first outlined the "freedoms" from his bully pulpit, the now-private-citizen Powell sees the current debate as mostly a "scrum" between big businesses like Verizon and Google, with consumers as the immediate beneficiaries.
