 Who Needs Phone Lines?

Vonage In Print News

August 11, 2003
By David Lagesse

Tim Kowalsky happily cut the cord to his local telephone company. No, he hasn't gone hermit--he's still making calls from home with a familiar touchtone phone. But the calls bounce magically through the Internet before reaching his Minneapolis neighbors or the local pizza parlor. And his phone bill has dropped by about $25 a month.

In Brief: Hanging up Landlines: An Internet Startup Called Vonage Wants to Repla

Vonage In Print News

August 9, 2003

By The Editors

An Internet startup called Vonage wants to replace your local phone company. It offers cut-rate service by routing calls over its customers' Internet connections.

Vonage claims its sound quality competes favorably with Ma Bell. When customers sign up, the company sends out a converter box that connects their phones to their broadband connection (cable modem, DSL, and the like). Once installed, it works like normal phone service-complete with dial tone.

'C' word use shocks IT industry

Vonage In Print News

August 8, 2003

By Cormac O'Reilly

Opinion As the "C" word creeps into everyday IT conversation, the confused get scared, and the squeamish, squirm. Of course we are talking commoditization, which not only heralds the end of big margins for the IT establishment, but ultimately the demise of the in-business IT community.

Let's look at the IT establishment, and the rush to get into EMC's big margin knickers. How exactly do you make big money on disk storage when it costs less than $1 a gigabyte? Good question, especially if your business model was developed in the halcyon days when a terabyte fetched $1m.

Advances In Internet Telephony Slash Bills And Irk Bells

Vonage In Print News

August 7, 2003

By Marcelo Rodriguez

When veterinarian Tom Tribolet moved to Buenos Aires to try his hand as a thoroughbred racehorse trainer six years ago, staying in touch with his sons in Arizona and California meant spending upward of $500 a month with the Spanish-owned company that controls half of Argentina's phone service.

Today, Tribolet can call anyone he wants in the United States and Canada any time he feels like it. And his monthly bill comes to $40.

Vonage® Adds 40,000th Broadband Telephone Line

Vonage Press Releases

Vonage Continues to Lead the Broadband Telephony Industry

Edison, NJ, August 4, 2003 – Vonage, the broadband phone company, today announces the activation of 40,000 total lines on its network.

With the addition of more than 1,500 lines to its network every week, Vonage’s active line base has doubled in just 90 days, further defining it as the leader in the broadband Internet telephony industry. Vonage’s call volume has also doubled in 90 days to over 40 million completed calls across its SIP network. This represents about two-thirds of all broadband telephone lines and calling activity nationwide, according to a June 2003 Merrill Lynch report. Consumers and small businesses are increasingly looking to Vonage as their broadband alternative to traditional telephone service.

U.S. Cablers, ISPs look to VoIP for Stickiness and Broadband Boost

August 4, 2003

By Steve Mullins

U.S. cablers and ISPs are rolling out voice-over-IP (VoIP) services as they look to sour broadband adoption and reduce churn. While leading cable companies are developing solutions themselves, smaller outfits and SPs without legacy networks are turning to turnkey outfits to provide voice capability.

Syndeo Sees VoIP Deployment in Japan as Good Sign for U.S.: Company Projects its Cable Clients Will Sign up 100,000 Phone Subscribers by Year-end

August 1, 2003

By Alan Breznick

If cable voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) service takes off in Japan, will it fly in the U.S. too? Syndeo Corp. executives certainly think so. In fact, they're pointing to the early cable VoIP results in Japan as proof that the technology can be a big hit on the North American continent as well.

In mid-July, Syndeo announced that its flagship product, the Syion Call Management Server (CMS) and Media Gateway Controller, now supports 10,000 actual VoIP subscribers on several Japanese cable systems. The initial estimates are that up to 20% of the cable subscribers who have been marketed are opting for the service.
