These Tips can Help Frequent Travelers Ensure Smooth Trips, From Airport Security Checks to Hotel Telecommunications Connections

October 6, 2003

By Dave Gussow and Jules Allen

The last-minute dash to catch a plane is fading into memory.

Hardy road warriors have had to adjust to a new world of travel in the past few years. More security means getting to the airport earlier. Longer waits at airports mean potentially more idle hours. Fewer flights mean scheduling can be more of a headache.

Savvy business travelers are making the most of a difficult situation. And technology is playing a key role in helping them stay on schedule, remain connected and be productive.

There's pressure on Netphone companies to conform

CHERYL GLASER, anchor:

The creation of the internet has changed how many of us do
some common things. Instead of shopping at the mall, for
instance, we try a dot-com. Instead of doing research at a
library, we can sit at home in our jammies and just Google
it. Instead of flirting in bars, we go to chat rooms.
Some of us even log on instead of using Ma Bell. And that,
of course, has some telecommunications regulators wondering
what to do about Internet phone companies. Jeff Horwich
reports.

Michigan Cable Operator To Resell Vonage

Vonage In Print News
October 1, 2003
By Charlotte Wolter

The business model for many of the hosted IP voice service providers includes wholesale arrangements with broadband network operators who would sell directly to their customers.

Now consumer SIP voice service provider Vonage has announced a wholesale agreement with Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU), which supplies several communities and the surrounding rural areas in central lower Michigan with high-speed data, basic and digital cable TV, and dial-up Internet, as well as being a long distance reseller.
The wholesale agreement is the third acknowledged by Vonage, which has an agreement with cable operator Armstrong and earlier had a resale agreement with BellSouth for that company's DSL subscribers in the Atlanta area. The RBOC abruptly canceled that service when the arrangement became publicly known

 Vonage CFO Sees Profits Ahead

Vonage In Print News

October 1, 2003
By Ray Le Maistre

SIP service provider Vonage Holdings Corp. is set to hit profitability by "the second quarter of next year," according to its CFO, John Rego.

Vonage has been racking up the milestones in recent months, signing up its 50,000th customer just last week (see Vonage Hits 50K VOIP Lines) and closing September with 54,000 customers, Rego tells Boardwatch. Its service is currently available in 90 U.S. markets in 30 states, and that will become 91 (and 31 states) this Friday or next Monday when Vermont's broadband subscriber can start using the firm's services.

Internet Phone Service Is Here: Bad News For Your Phone Company: Good, Cheap Internet Phone Service Is Finally Here

October 1, 2003

By Robert X. Cringely

The only thing I have in common with Howard Stern (other than the fact that we are both mammals) is that we both use Internet telephone service from a company called Vonage.

The Vonage service allows Howard and me to make, for $39.99 per month, unlimited phone calls anywhere in the U.S. and Canada and darned cheap phone calls to anywhere else in the world. It uses real phones and real phone numbers and is just like the service you're used to, except that calls are routed over the Internet rather than over a telephone company's network. Vonage is aimed at people with broadband Internet connections (primarily DSL or a cable modem) and uses a technology called voice over Internet protocol (VoIP). And it could kill your phone company.

 Vonage Hits 50K VOIP Lines

Vonage In Print News

September 26, 2003
By Staff

EDISON, N.J. -- Vonage, the broadband phone company, today announces the activation of 50,000 total lines on its network.

With the addition of more than 2,000 lines to its network every week, Vonage’s active line base has reached 50,000, further defining it as the leader in the broadband Internet telephony industry. Vonage’s call volume has recently hit 60 million completed calls across its SIP network and continues to grow at an exponential rate. This represents over half of all broadband telephone lines and calling activity nationwide, according to a June 2003 Merrill Lynch report. Consumers and small businesses are increasingly looking to Vonage as their broadband alternative to traditional telephone service.
