New Services Turn Web Connection Into Phone

Vonage In Print News

September 15, 2003
By Charlie Paschal

I've always said using the Internet as a telephone had promise, even back in the last century when you had to dial up to get Internet access, use a sound card and speakers to talk to someone for "free."

With today's high-speed Internet, more attention is rightly being focused on VOIP -- voice over Internet protocol, the technology to turn your Web connection into a telephone.

 Bells' Hell: VOIP?

Vonage In Print News

September 12, 2003
By Jo Maitland

U.S. Bells facing the threat of VOIP services from cable operators must start preparing for VOIP now or wave goodbye to their voice businesses, according to the latest research from UBS AG(see Cable's Voice Getting Louder)

VOIP has the potential to do to wireline carriers what file sharing is doing to the recording industry,” John Hodulik, telecom services analyst at UBS, told press and analysts on a conference call today.

 Taking On The Telecom Giants

Vonage In Print News

September 11, 2003
By Martha McKay

In the end, bureaucracy pushed Scott Testa to try upstart Vonage's $40-a-month phone service.
"Dealing with Verizon was like dealing with the Pentagon," said Testa, a Pennsylvania software executive who spends summers at the New Jersey shore.
Frustrated by delays installing two new phone lines in his home, Testa called on Vonage, an Edison-based Internet phone company he had recently read about.

Vonage In Print News

A friend of mine, a frequent traveller who takes his laptop everywhere, recently started packing another device in his suitcase. The device in question is a Vonage box: a phone that plugs into his internet connection and lets him make cheap phone calls anywhere in the world. It's the much-vaunted voice-over-the-internet (VOIP), but this time it works. His Vonage phone has a Manhattan number and he can actually receive calls on it from anyone with a plain old phone. So whenever he is abroad, rather than using his cellphone, he finds a public Wi-Fi hotspot and calls back the US for free. Say goodbye to roaming charges.

Michigan Cable Operator To Resell Vonage

Vonage In Print News
September 10, 2003

By Charlotte Wolter

The business model for many of the hosted IP voice service providers includes wholesale arrangements with broadband network operators who would sell directly to their customers.

Now consumer SIP voice service provider Vonage has announced a wholesale agreement with Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU), which supplies several communities and the surrounding rural areas in central lower Michigan with high-speed data, basic and digital cable TV, and dial-up Internet, as well as being a long distance reseller.

Time to Rewrite the Rules of Telecom

September 8, 2003

By Jane Black

Now that voice calls can be sent over the Net, existing phone regulations are becoming irrelevant. The FCC has to make some tough choices.

Since its launch in April, 2002, Internet telephony company Vonage has been a rip-roaring success. Over the last year, the Edison (N.J.) company signed up 45,000 customers, who pay a flat rate of $39.99 a month for unlimited local and long-distance calling, plus caller ID, voice mail, call waiting, and a bevy of other services.

VoIP Goes To City Hall

September 5, 2003

By Ben Charney

The city of Coldwater, Mich., this week became the nation's first municipality to sell Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, telephone service to its residents.

The city is trying to create competition for Verizon Communications, the lone telephone provider in this town of about 10,000 residents, said Linden Cox, the communications manager of Coldwater's Board of Utilities.

Vonage's VoIP System Goes The Distance

Vonage In Print News

September 5, 2003
By Vincent A. Randazzese

The promise of low- or no-cost long-distance calling via voice-over-IP has come to fruition with the Vonage Digital Voice service, which allows businesses to replace their traditional long-distance service provider with VoIP without sacrificing an ounce of productivity.

Vonage offers all the bells and whistles expected with normal telephone service, but the solution truly shines when it comes to how much money businesses can actually save.

Upstart broadband-Internet-telephony provider Vonage has landed a partnership deal with the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities to deploy its service to cable customers in the Michigan city.

It marks the third deal Vonage has struck with a cable provider, having inked deals earlier this summer with Armstrong Cable Services, a cable provider with territory in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia and Kentucky, and with Advanced Cable Communications, a provider in Coral Springs and Weston, Fla.
