 Others Debut Besides Office

Vonage In Print News

October 21, 2003
By Mark Kellner

The release of Microsoft Corp.'s Office 2003 productivity suite today will garner reactions from yawns to cheers — I'm closer to the cheering side. But there are two new products that deserve close examination by those wanting more order for their workday.

The first is PlanPlus, a software program from FranklinCovey that works inside of Microsoft Outlook. It adds the Franklin Planner system's "prioritized daily task list" and daily journal pages to Outlook, while retaining the e-mail browsing and address book capabilities of the Microsoft-created personal information manager. While Outlook has a to-do list feature, there are advantages to the FranklinCovey system, such as better prioritization.

VoIP Solutions: A Boon To Small Businesses

Vonage In Print News

October 20, 2003
By Frank J. Ohlhorst

Many small businesses consider their monthly phone bills a necessary and often uncontrollable cost. Voice-over-IP technology can help tame those monthly costs, however, and a number of fledgling broadband VoIP phone service providers offer telephone service for a fraction of the cost of traditional telcos.

 Vonage Reaches 50,000 Customers

Vonage In Print News

October 16, 2003
By Staff

With the addition of more than 2,000 lines to its network every week, Vonage’s active line base has reached 50,000, further defining it as the leader in the broadband Internet telephony industry.

Vonage’s call volume has recently hit 60 million completed calls across its SIP network and continues to grow at an exponential rate. This represents over half of all broadband telephone lines and calling activity nationwide, according to a June 2003 Merrill Lynch report. Consumers and small businesses are increasingly looking to Vonage as their broadband alternative to traditional telephone service.

Court hangs up state VoIP rules

Vonage In Print News

A court opinion released Thursday could help propel the upstart Internet phone industry to the front ranks of telecommunications.

The industry stands to benefit from a legal distinction drawn by a U.S. District judge in defining Internet and traditional telephone services. The ruling is being closely watched by industry executives and consumers nationwide as voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services struggle to move into the mainstream.

Judge Davis' decision in Vonage v. Minnesota PUC

Vonage Press ReleasesFriends of Vonage,
The attached PDF is Judge Davis' decision in Vonage v. Minnesota PUC. A summary of the document appears below:
This case illustrates the impact of emerging technologies evolving ahead of
the regulatory scheme intended to address them. The issue before the Court is tied to the evolution of the Internet and the expansion of its capability to transmit voice communications. Despite its continued growth and development, the Internet remains in its infancy, and is an uncharted frontier with vast unknowns left to explore. Congress has expressed a clear intent to leave the Internet free from undue regulation so that this growth and exploration may continue. Congress also differentiated between "telecommunications services," which may be regulated,
and "information services," which like the Internet, may not.
Plaintiff Vonage Holdings Corporation ("Vonage") provides a service that
permits voice communications over the Internet. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission ("MPUC") issued an order requiring Vonage to comply with Minnesota laws that regulate telephone companies. Vonage has asked this Court to enjoin the MPUC, arguing that it provides information services, and not telecommunications services.

VoIP, Satellite Companies Join On Remote-Area Phone Service

October 15, 2003

By W. David Gardner

VoIP providers have been eyeing satellite links as a potential delivery vehicle for their voice offerings, but not much has happened. Until this week, that is when two VoIP companies -- Vonage Holdings and Net2Phone announced moves into the area.

Vonage is teaming up with SkyFrames to deliver its service to a small number of U.S. troops serving in Iraq, while Net2Phone is joining with Hughes Electronics to offer its satellite VoIP service with Africa as the initial target region.
