The Internet Hangs Up On Ma Bell

November 13, 2003

By Larry Magid

(CBS) "Internet telephony" has been around for several years but, thanks to companies like Vonage, it's finally ready for prime time. Vonage offers a service that lets people with high-speed cable modems or DSL lines to make and receive local and long-distance calls using a regular phone pretty much as they do now. Instead of using traditional phone companies like SBC, Verizon and other "Baby Bells," Vonage is routing the calls through the Internet.

Talk Is Cheap When Calls Are Route Over The Web

Voice-Over Internet Protocol (VOIP):
November 1, 2003
By Matthew Maier

The great bandwidth investment boom of the late 1990s is finally paying dividends on the form of less expensive phone calls. VOIP technology transmits voice signals over high-bandwidth networks using Internet protocol, the same standard that computers use to exchange data online. Though VOIP has been around for years, it’s been plagued by poor voice quality and “lag” caused by network congestion. Yet thanks to new data compression and prioritization software, VOIP quality now rivals that of traditional circuit-switched calls for as little as a 10th of the cost.

Net Phone Finally Lives Up To Promise

Vonage In Print News

November 2, 2003
By Alan Hoffman

Goodbye Verizon, Hello Vonage.

If my trial run with Vonage, an Internet-telephone system, is any indication, that is just what phone customers around the state will be saying during coming months and years.

Unlike earlier efforts to provide phone service via the Internet, Vonage's service doesn't sound like a toy walkie-talkie or require a special phone headset connected to a computer. A visitor to your house, picking up the phone to make a call, would never know the call was being made via the Internet, rather than a traditional line: You pick up a phone, hear the dial tone and place your call.
