Will Telephone Calls Be Free?

December 16, 2003

By Michael Rogers

The folks who shook up the music world with KaZaA want to make telephone calls free. Do they have a chance?

Technologists used to predict that in a true broadband Internet world the cost of sending voice telephone calls would become so low that it would no longer be worth billing for them. Now, in a flurry of year-end announcements, everyone from start-ups to Ma Bell herself has announced their intention to deliver voice over the Internet. So when does the free part start?

Regulating IP Telephony

December 15, 2003

By Staff

The surest sign that VOIP is a success is the growing crowd of folks looking to get into its pockets. The Federal Communications Commission is arriving on the scene none too soon and could fill the role of police officer. The agency is now mulling how to regulate this evolving technology to the satisfaction of traditional phone carriers on one side and VOIP service providers on the other.

Vonage In Print News

December 15, 2003

By Joan Engebretson

CHICAGO – By now, most of the telecom community has heard the new catchphrase: "The killer broadband app is voice." After two high-profile VOIP-over-broadband announcements this week (one from Time Warner and one from AT&T), you'll probably start hearing that catchphrase from your accountant, your next door neighbor and the guy who gives you your coffee every morning at Starbucks.

Internet-Based Phone Calls Catching On

December 15, 2003

By Julie Jacobson

We know that the Internet -- at least a high-speed broadband connection -- does a pretty good job of sending music to PCs and even traditional stereo gear. It shouldn't be a surprise, then, that the Internet can transmit voice as well. Software exists today that can turn a PC into a virtual telephone. Just connect a microphone or headset to the computer, and place your call from there. The technology has been available for years from a bunch of niche players in the computer sector.

Court Cases Affected Spam, Copyright, Music And Much More In 2003

December 15, 2003

By Michael Geist

As individuals grappled with a deluge of spam and anti-spam legislation, concerns about their personal privacy, and confusion over the application of copyright law to the online environment, 2003 was a busy year for technology law. Although activities south of the border often capture headlines, Canadian technology law developments literally ran the gamut from A to Z.
