Internet-Based Phone Calls Catching On

December 15, 2003

By Julie Jacobson

We know that the Internet -- at least a high-speed broadband connection -- does a pretty good job of sending music to PCs and even traditional stereo gear. It shouldn't be a surprise, then, that the Internet can transmit voice as well. Software exists today that can turn a PC into a virtual telephone. Just connect a microphone or headset to the computer, and place your call from there. The technology has been available for years from a bunch of niche players in the computer sector.

The Carriers Are Coming

December 15, 2003

By Marguerite Reardon

With large telecommunication service providers and cable operators such as AT&T, Qwest Communications International and Time Warner Cable entering the residential voice over Internet Protocol market, smaller players such as Vonage, 8x8, VoicePulse and Net2Phone will likely feel the pressure.

Court Cases Affected Spam, Copyright, Music And Much More In 2003

December 15, 2003

By Michael Geist

As individuals grappled with a deluge of spam and anti-spam legislation, concerns about their personal privacy, and confusion over the application of copyright law to the online environment, 2003 was a busy year for technology law. Although activities south of the border often capture headlines, Canadian technology law developments literally ran the gamut from A to Z.

Local Firms Pick Up

December 15, 2003

By Staff

Dec. 15, 2003 — It's a technology that's been around for almost a decade. But until now, it was too expensive and too obscure for most to understand -- a party trick for tech geeks.

But in the last few months, mainstream users have begun to see the potential of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) -- a technology that essentially allows users to make calls over the Internet, in some cases substantially reducing the long-distance costs incurred by placing calls over traditional voice lines.

IP Telephony -- Coming Of Age In The US

December 14, 2003

By Staff

IP telephony has been "in the works" for many years, starting with pioneers like VocalTec. In the US this month, there suddenly seemed to be that confluence of events that marks the tipping point for a technology. Local exchange carrier, interexchange carrier and cable companies all announced new VoIP services.

Big Telecom Companies Now Boosting Internet Phone Service

December 13, 2003

By Roy Bragg

Five years ago, using a computer to make a phone call was fraught with anxiety.

Armed with sound-equipped PCs, users could have conversations converted to digital packets and sent across the same Internet networks that let them surf Web pages, send and receive e-mail and download music files. They avoided the traditional phone networks completely.

VoIP: Here, There, Everywhere

December 12, 2003

By Mark McClusky

Fans of Internet telephony will soon have a significantly larger selection of providers, as some of the biggest fishes in the telecommunications industry rush to roll out services.

On Thursday, AT&T, the largest U.S. long-distance provider, put its weight behind the popular technology, announcing that it will begin selling telephone service using voice over Internet protocol.

Longer Obscure, VoIP Is Catching On With Major Telecoms

December 12, 2003

By Dan Richman

Save 20 percent on your phone bill and get cool features that just aren't possible with conventional phone service?

That sounded good to Bainbridge Island's Bob Silver, who in September began using a once-obscure technology that suddenly seems irresistible to major telecom players: Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.

Consumers Wired About Web Calls

December 12, 2003

By Derek Rose

It's the beginning of the end for plain old telephone service.

Even before AT&T announced yesterday that it would offer Internet-based phone calls next year, New Yorkers already had begun junking 20th-century copper wires in favor of cyberspace dialing.
