The Online Landscape Expands

December 29, 2003

In the next five years, the proliferation of broadband and wi-fi will create huge opportunities for growing companies and even greater risks for those with entrenched positions.

Broadband access is ramping up in the home, and wi-fi is becoming available in restaurants, hotels, and public areas. This will make Internet access far easier than it is now, changing the way consumers act.

Legg Mason Awarded Vonage "Company Of The Year"

December 29, 2003

By Staff

Legg Mason awarded Vonage "company of the year" in its annual tongue-in-cheek "Telecom & Media Insider Awards."

Legg Mason said Vonage won "by virtue of the highest ratio of Google links to revenue and for generating more press and policy proceedings per customer than any company in history." Covad was named runner-up because: "Despite having the support of 4 FCC commissioners, the company lost a key vote 3-2, but its stock still shot up about 1,000% in next 6 months. We should all lose so uniquely and so profitably."

Phone Call To The Future

December 26, 2003

By Jerri Stroud

Time Warner offers digital phone. Vonage Holdings sells broadband voice. Other companies call their service voice over packet or IP telecommunications. But to what all are referring is voice over Internet protocol: telephone service transmitted over data networks.

"Everyone is making up new words because they decided that the best way not to sell something was to call it VoIP," said Judy Reed Smith, chief executive of ACM Group Inc., a technology research firm.
