Internet Phone Connections Grow More Popular

January 18, 2004

By Bobby White

This was it. Cheryl Moseng looked at her telephone bill and felt enough was enough. She decided the time had come to sever the cord with her service provider.

"I got fed up with the telephone companies and my high bills," she said. "What annoyed me the most was every phone bill started with a base price, then you had all these add-on fees. After I took a look at it, I saw the fees and taxes were almost equal to the base price."

One Tech Girl's View Of The Consumer Electronics Show In Las Vegas

January 17, 2004

For a girl who loves tech toys, the dot-com culture and warmth, the jazzed up allure of that desert oasis known as Vegas in January was never so enticing as it was last week during the annual geek trek to The Consumer Electronics Show.

Behind VoIP's Renaissance

January 17, 2004

By Staff

Declared dead just a few years ago, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)--or the ability to make phone calls over the Internet--is back, bearing all the markings of a Next Big Thing.

Just a few weeks into 2004, signs of VoIP's quickening pulse are everywhere. Phone carriers are practically tripping over each other to announce aggressive VoIP strategies aimed at both consumers and businesses. Not to be outdone, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Comcast have trumpeted their own forays into the VoIP market

Can Voice Over IP Stay Tax-Free?

January 16, 2004

By Adrienne Newell, Medill News Service

WASHINGTON -- Cheap phone service over the Internet has high-profile champions who say they'll keep the technology safe from regulation, even as several states consider taxing it.

Both Michael Powell, chair of the Federal Communications Commission, and Senator John Sununu (R-New Hampshire) say they will work this year to keep voice over IP technology free from regulation that could stifle it.

Study Finds VoIP Anticipated By Consumers

January 15, 2004

By Kevin Fitchard

Voice over IP may be entering the popular lexicon--the concept, at least if not the term VoIP itself--according to a new study released by Parks Associates today.

The study shows that 50% of Internet households are interested in VoIP as a way of reducing monthly long-distance charges. The results are slightly skewed to broadband users, 52% of which expressed interest in VoIP compared to 48% of narrowband dial-up users, according to the study.
