Regulators Worry As Net Phone Service Surges

Vonage In Print News

January 12, 2004

By Hiawatha Bray

After a long, dry spell, things are getting good for Internet entrepreneur Jeff Pulver -- if he can just keep the government from mucking it up. Pulver spent the past decade preparing for the day when the world would adopt a technology called Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VOIP, that transmits speech over the Internet as if it were e-mail. The tech bust of the past three years delayed the revolution, but it has finally arrived. Now Pulver wants help from the government, in the form of a good leaving-alone.

Corporations Team Up To Bring Round-The-Clock Free Phone Service To U.S. Troops Stationed In Iraq

January 12, 2004

By Michelle Tyrell

U.S. troops stationed in Iraq face hardships every day, and the loneliness caused by separation from friends and family is a constant companion. Reliable, secure phone service is available only sporadically, and even then it can be prohibitively expensive. Some troops report paying $25 a minute to call home on a satellite phone. And while Internet access is available, many report that it is extremely slow. There are phone banks in Kuwait, but for troops stationed in remote areas or on the front lines the nearest secure telephone call may be 200 miles away. Now, a cadre of U.S. corporations is pitching in to address the problem. Led by SkyFrames Inc., Vonage and Motorola's Canopy™ division, the Freedom Calls Foundation is providing modern communications equipment to the troops.

Deal Will Enable Customers To Make Web Calls Without Installing Additional Equipment

January 12, 2004

By John Blau

Customers of Vonage Holding Corp.'s Internet-based phone service will soon benefit from a chip set deal with Texas Instruments Inc. (TI), allowing them to make Web calls without having to install an additional piece of equipment.

Under the deal announced Friday, TI will embed Vonage's Internet telephony software features into new chip sets that can be integrated into devices such as cable or DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modems. As a result, Vonage customers using modems with these chip sets will no longer require a piece of equipment supplied by the Net phone company to make calls.

BRAD HOLBROOK, co-anchor:

Welcome back to Business Week Money Talks.

Coming up, the NFL gets serious, Sirius radio that is. We'll explain that to you in a minute. But first, a big difference in the way people talk to one another.

Several major telephone companies, like here at AT&T, plan
to start routing phone calls over Internet. Now this won't
make a big difference to the way you place a call. But it
might make a big difference in how much you have to pay for
