Incumbents Push FCC On Question Of VoIP Regulation

January 30, 2004

By Josh Long

It is likely going to take at least a year before the FCC releases sweeping rules governing regulation of phone companies routing calls over the Internet. But the top U.S. telecom regulator is expected to clarify rules pertaining to some more narrow aspects of voice over IP as early as March.

The Telephone's Second Revolution

January 29, 2004

By David Whelan

BURLINGAME, CALIF. - When cellular telephone service became commercially available in the U.S. in the early 1980s, it represented the first revolutionary change in the way phone calls are made since the invention of the telephone in the 1870's. Now, we're on the cusp of the next revolution of telephone service.

VoIP Is Mature. Fire The Baby Bell!

January 29, 2004

By Jay Menna

I hate my local phone company. Every month the bill comes with half a dozen itemized charges: Local Access Fee, 911 fee, touch-tone fee, intralata blah blah blah.

Being a Mac geek, about 60% of my communications traffic now goes out as video over iChatAV, but I'll never get my 96 year old grandfather to use a computer and I like being able to talk to people on cell phones. So I still need the Baby Bell. So how can I get rid of the phone company and use only my broad band connection to communicate with everyone?

Voice Over The Internet: Let It Fly

January 29, 2004

A big reason the Internet has taken off is that government has kept out of the way. Hands-off is always the best policy for a new technology. It lets innovators innovate and investors avoid the extra risks of special taxes and rules.

I Want My VoIP

January 27, 2004

By Jon Arnold

It's been 20 years since the breakup of AT&T, and with it, the arrival of the first wave of deregulation in the modern era of digital communications.

A year after that 1984 breakup, Dire Straits released their biggest hit, "Money For Nothing," with the never-can-get-enough mantra "I want my MTV."
