U.S. District Judge Michael Davis Won't Reverse His October Ruling To Keep Broadband Phone Services Unregulated In The State, His Clerk Said Wednesday

January 21, 2004

By Ben Charny

In late October, two Minnesota state agencies asked Davis to alter his decision to permanently bar Minnesota from applying traditional telephone rules to Vonage, a pioneer in technology that lets consumers bypass the traditional phone network by making voice calls over a broadband connection. Representatives of these two agencies, the state's not be immediately reached Wednesday for comment.

Airport Extreme And Internet Telephones: Please Map My Port

January 21, 2004

By Gene Steinberg

When someone woke up and realized that the Internet could transfer phone calls as easily as anything else, a new industry was born. But it wasn't always easy. In the early days of Net2Phone, for example, you had to don an operator's headset or a separate mic and earphone to talk to someone, and the person on the other end had to be similarly outfitted.

Although that sort of service is still around, the latest round of VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) services work with your ordinary corded or cordless phone. As most of you know, the big boys and girls in the telephone industry are preparing to leap into this technology with a vengeance; some are testing it even as we speak. Users can bypass copper wires and harness the power of their broadband connections. Hence, the telecommunications companies can sell you broadband too, if you don't already have it.

Introduction

Many of you may have done the same thing my wife and I did more than two years ago - we went “totally digital”. We got rid of our POTS line (Plain Old Telephone Service) and decided we only needed our cell phones.

Unicast Goes Full-Screen With Video Ads

January 20, 2004

By Zachary Rodgers

Unicast has debuted a new ad offering, currently in beta release, that delivers broadband full-screen video in Microsoft's Windows Media Player format.

Called Video Commercial, the rollout marks Unicast's first new format since the company released its full-screen Superstitial in April 2003. It came out of a technology partnership with Microsoft in which the software company allowed Unicast to build on its Windows Media 9 Series platform.

Vonage Broadband Telephone Service

January 20, 2004

By Jeff Fila

Introduction

Many of you may have done the same thing my wife and I did more than two years ago - we went “totally digital”. We got rid of our POTS line (Plain Old Telephone Service) and decided we only needed our cell phones.

We had cable access. Since we were already paying for two cell phones, getting rid of that landline bill saved us over $40 a month.

But things have a way of changing. We had a baby and were home more often than before. We received and made more calls than ever before. That first month after our child was born, we had over $100 in extra charges because we went way over our alotted minutes. We’ve gone over by $50 or more twice since then. But there was no way we were ever going back to a landline.

As Consumers Look For Alternatives To Land-Line Phones, Telecom And Cable Companies Are Offering Internet-Based Phone Services As A Way To Diversify Their Offerings And Grow Revenue

January 19, 2004

By Louis Hau

Time was, you paid the local telephone company for phone service.Period. End of story.

But consider the case of St. Petersburg resident Stanley Ferrebee. Three years ago, the 69-year-old retired truck driver wondered why he needed Verizon if he already had a cell phone. So he "cut the cord" and went wireless.

Computer-Based Phone Services May Lack Connection To 911 Line

January 19, 2004

By Joe Kollin

WESTON -- Need to call 911? If you are using a phone connected to one of those popular new computer-based telephone services, the response you get might not be what you expect. Known as voice over Internet protocol, or VOIP, the cheap phone service is available to anyone with a high-speed Internet connection. But the downside is that it is not necessarily connected to the 911 emergency line.
