 Choices, Competition, Cutbacks

Vonage In Print News

February 9, 2004

By Shawn Young

More than three years after the Internet and telecommunications investment bubble burst and the economy soured, the nation's phone companies remain besieged.

Businesses still aren't splurging on hiring or technology, which means there's less demand for office phone lines or expanded corporate telecom systems. Consumers are taking advantage of an unprecedented array of affordable choices, ranging from calling over the Internet to using a long-distance carrier for local service. And many investors, whose money disappeared with the bubble, are gone for good.

Thorny Issues Await F.C.C. As It Takes Up Internet Phones

Vonage In Print News

February 9, 2004

By Stephen Labaton

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 - The effort to write the rules for Internet telephone service begins this week, and whether it succeeds may ultimately come down to a matter of money.

On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission is set to consider approving a notice of proposed rulemaking, the first step in a lengthy process of writing regulations for Internet-based phone services. The commission is also set to issue a final decision on a petition by one of the new Internet phone companies, Pulver.com, which has asked the commission to rule that it does not need to pay interconnection access fees to phone companies for any calls made and received between computers through Internet connections.

 Internet Calls Challenge Phone Firms

Vonage In Print News

February 9, 2004

By Staff

Fixed-line telephony, already challenged by mobile phones, will come under more pressure from cheap or free calls made over the Internet and this may force telecoms firms to change business models, industry experts say. 'I don't believe one can charge for telephony calls in the future,' said Internet innovator Niklas Zennstrom, who runs Skype, a London-based company offering free software to make free phone calls between two computers over the Internet.

 Change Ahead For Net Calls

Vonage In Print News

February 9, 2004

By Mark Ward

How a web-based service for making phone calls is changing the way we talk, work - and get billed.

Net chat could soon mean just that - talking instead of typing text into an e-mail or instant message.

This is because the net is rapidly replacing telephone networks as the preferred route for phone calls, thanks to a formidably-named technology known as voice-over IP - internet protocol - or Voip.
