 Wireless Usurps Landline Phones

Vonage In Print News

March 2, 2004

By Andrew Mayeda

It has served us well, the telephone.

In the roughly 125 years since Alexander Graham Bell gave his assistant a call in the next room, it has become the most common technological device on the planet.

But, the traditional wireline phone is ringing a lot less frequently these days.

Voice-over-IP (Internet Protocol) technology promises to dismantle the century-old local telephone business by wiping out traditional geographic boundaries and blurring the traditional dividing lines separating the Internet from the public phone network. Along the way, VoIP could propel broadband penetration, pushing high-speed Internet access into more and more homes and businesses.

Vonage Makes Phoning Through The Internet Convenient And Cheap

February 26, 2004

By Walter S. Mossberg

If you're sick of your local or long-distance phone company, you now have an alternative: Internet phone calling.

Internet calling can save you money, and allow you to add features and flexibility unheard of in the traditional phone industry.

The idea of making voice calls over the Internet isn't new. For years, some Internet users have been doing this, mainly to save money on international calls. But it was a pretty techie process. You had to use a PC, or a special phone, and find the other person in some special online directory, or by typing in an Internet address. The quality of calls was lousy.

An Online Phone Service Shows That Internet Telephony’s Time May Finally Have Come

March 1, 2004
By Simson Garfinkel

I first heard about Internet telephony back in 1985, when MIT professor Steven Burns told me about an “Etherphone” that some researchers at Xerox had created to send voice over a computer network. The system worked by taking a person’s voice, digitizing it, breaking that digital data into packets, and finally sending those packets over a high-speed network. At the other end, another Etherphone reversed the whole process. Neat technology, I thought, but far too computationally intensive and wasteful of resources to ever be practical.
