There's So Much Wrong With The World. Here's What's Right

Telephony Now

You got a celly and a two-way, plus broadband at work and in your living room. You barely use your home phone, and wish you could dead it. With the Vonage voiceover broadband service, you can. Connect the black box to your existing broadband line and to your phone, and for as little as $14.99 per month, you have a home phone with caller ID, call-waiting and voicemail (you can even check messages over email). The kicker is, it's portable: Anywhere in the world you can connect to broadband, people can reach you--at you "home" number. vonage.com, BeoCom 1 phone by Bang& Olufsen, $595, bang-olufsen.com.

Everything A Road Warrior Needs To Know About This New Technology

April 1, 2004

Voice Over IP for Mobile Professionals

When said out loud, "VoIP" sounds like something that should be quickly followed by, "Excuse me; it must be that burrito I ate for lunch."

But get used to it, because in the coming months, with AT&T and other companies entering the nascent market, you'll be hearing more about VoIP--short for Voice over Internet Protocol. And I'd advise you to listen, because the lower costs and portability of phone features that VoIP offers makes the technology a potentially compelling new telecommunications alternative for mobile professionals.

Microsoft Scores In VoIP Arena

April 1, 2004

Microsoft is trying to marry its newly-unveiled Windows CE 5.0 platform for embedded devices to the voice-over-IP (VoIP) arena and several vendors have answered with, "I do."

The new platform for embedded devices, which will be ready for original equipment manufacturers later this year, has significantly more complete VoIP capabilities. Vendors such as NEC and LG Electronics said this week they will manufacture phones based on the platform.

In addition, VoIP vendor Vonage said it would offer its customers softphone software based on Windows CE. Softphone software enables devices such as handhelds to operate as VoIP phones.

Rise Of Internet Services Causes Stir Among Phone Companies, Regulators

April 1, 2004

By Kevin Rademacher

Las Vegas businessman Maurice Gallagher watched with interest recently as telephone companies struggled to extract meaning from a U.S. Appeals Court ruling.

The order, which is subject to a U.S. Supreme Court appeal, could limit competitors' access to the telephone networks created by former monopoly providers. Those dominant providers hailed the ruling as a return to fair play.

Competitors, and some consumer groups, said it could put an end to competition and spark higher phone rates.

The Real Transport Convergence

April 1, 2004

By Loring Wirbel

Forget all that talk about "triple play" voice, data, and video access in consumer markets, or integrated IP transport in enterprise aggregators.

The real move to unify all communications traffic can be seen in discrete and disparate events occurring in the first quarter of 2004, such as Juniper Networks' (www.juniper.net ) unprecedented $4 billion offer for enterprise security specialist NetScreen, and the widespread popularity of IP-based voice carrier Vonage.

Most analyses of the Juniper offer look at the router company's efforts to bid into security. A few pundits spoke of Juniper's belated efforts to get its name as well-established in enterprise networks as it is within the carrier customer base. But the real story is the unified position that routed IP is playing in all communications realms, and what that says about the size and diversity of the network equipment vendors that will have platforms offering a unified standard from LAN to global WAN.

Engineer Likes To Play On Land, Sky And Sea

April 1, 2004

In Rio de Janeiro, it is not uncommon to see a paraglider soaring above the city.

Dan Rodrigues grew up in Brazil, but it was not until he attended college in New Jersey, that he began paragliding by himself. Two years later, he became an instructor.

Asked what paragliding feels like, 33-year-old Rodrigues says it is hard to explain.

"If you don't do it, you'd never know it," he says. "It's like you gained an extra sense when you learn to fly" -- like walking.

SBC Communications is not the only company making news in the Wi-Fi space this week, Time Warner Cable, Boingo Wireless and Vonage all have made announcements of their own.

Just in time for the NCAA's Final Four appearance in San Antonio, Time Warner Cable has unveiled its largest Road Runner Speed Zone to date. The Wi-Fi service will be offered to its Road Runner customers at the San Antonio Rivercenter Courtyard in time for this week's semifinals and finals of the men's college basketball championship being played in San Antonio. Airespace's wireless local area network system is powering the service.

VoIP Reaches Out, Wirelessly

March 30, 2004

By Sebastian Rupley

The talk at the VON (Voice On the Net) conference this week in Silicon Valley is not just about Voice over IP (VoIP) technology, but the coming convergence of Wi-Fi wireless LAN technology and VoIP services. That melding is already leading to the development of new products and services, with many more expected later this year.

The Promise Of Big Savings On Phone Calls

The Promise Of Big Savings On Phone Calls Has Helped Propel ''Voice Over Internet Protocol" Out Of The Telecommunications Lab And Into Consumer Consciousness

March 29, 2004

By Peter J. Howe

For Bill Costello's law firm, switching to a phone system that carries voice calls in the same format -- and on the same wires -- as e-mail and Web pages certainly has helped cut costs, by $3,500 to $4,200 a month.

But it has also meant a huge new array of services and features that are revolutionizing the concept of ''telephone." Recent VOIP converts tell stories like the one about the lawyer who took his laptop computer to Alaska and used it to make and take phone calls on his Chicago phone number. Or the accountants, suddenly flooded out of their office by a busted pipe, who simply unplugged their VOIP phones and computers, reinstalled them to a conference room, and got back to work -- within 60 minutes.
