Vonage VoIP Service Challenges Primus
Prices Falling With Competition In Market

April 6, 2004

By Tyler Hamilton

Prices are already starting to fall as competition takes hold in Canada's budding voice-over-Internet phone market.

The Star has learned that Edison, N.J.-based Vonage Holdings Corp., which has been talking about entering the Canadian market for nearly a year, has quietly launched Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, phone service in six provinces, including five cities in Southern Ontario.

Road Trip: High-Tech Gadgets Keep Many In Touch Even On Vacation

April 6, 2004

By Karen Bells

For the gadget lovers of the world, it's a glorious time to be alive. And there's almost nowhere they don't take their toys.

"I'd never go on vacation and not stay connected," said Subhas Patel, managing director of the Symmes Township-based Keystone Hotel Group. "Most of my trips are both business and pleasure. So even if I'm on vacation I still have to be available -- I'm still kind of on the fire-alarm list."

Patel used to travel with just his cell phone and personal digital assistant (PDA), leaving his laptop at home because of the inconvenience and the fear of losing it and all the important work information it contained. But now he's comfortable traveling with a laptop again.

Vonage Offers Internet Phone Service In Canada, Star Reports

April 6, 2004

By Staff

April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Vonage Holdings Corp., a closely held U.S. telephone company, is offering cheaper phone services in Canada by routing calls over the Internet, challenging Primus Telecommunications Group Inc., the Toronto Star reported.

Vonage is the second company in Canada to offer the residential service, called Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP, the newspaper said. Primus was the first when it introduced its TalkBroadband Internet phone service in January.

When was the last time you ooohhed and aaahed at your telephone? Probably never, right? Because let's face it, the traditional home phone may be amazingly reliable, but its coolness factor is almost zero.

This might be the year that changes.

Internet phone service -- where you make calls through your broadband Internet connection using a regular telephone -- is picking up steam. And for the first time since mobile phones hit the market, the technology could make people seriously rethink Alexander Graham Bell's 127-year-old invention.

Telephony Market Catches On, As Calls Come Via Internet

Tacoma, Wash., Telephony Market Catches On, As Calls Come Via Internet

April 5, 2004

By Marcelene Edwards

High-speed Internet access is making telephone calls a lot cheaper and providing more fancy features.

Some consumers are already paying just $35 a month or less for unlimited calls to anywhere in the United States.
They also get free voice mail and free caller ID. Under some plans, you can keep your current number. And voice mails can pop up in your e-mail inbox.

The technology -- called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP -- uses the Internet to send telephone calls. It's beginning to replace traditional telephone services in homes and businesses around the country, including the South Sound.

Push On To Make VOIP Open Source; SIPfoundry Initiative Pulls Together Several Projects

April 5, 2004

By Paula Musich

Several IP telephony veterans are banding together to organize the first major open-source community concentrating on VOIP technology.

Pingtel Corp., of Woburn, Mass., is spearheading the initiative, dubbed SIPfoundry, by releasing its SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) software platform into the open-source world as well as by forming a nonprofit organization to give legal and technical assistance to open-source developers working with voice over IP. Pingtel's mission, officials said, is to do for IP telephony what Apache and Linux have done for enterprise servers.

Two Hot Technology Trends - Wi-Fi Wireless Internet Access And Voice-Over-Internet Service - Could Come Together Soon With Wi-Fi Phones That Promise Free Or Very Inexpensive Calls

April 4, 2004

Two hot technology trends - Wi-Fi wireless Internet access and voice-over-Internet service - could come together soon with Wi-Fi phones that promise free or very inexpensive calls.

Voice-over-Internet carrier Vonage Holdings Corp. is testing Wi-Fi handsets it hopes to sell by fall. The devices would look like cordless phones and would likely be used in homes with Wi-Fi networks.

Rival Net2Phone Corp. is six months into a test of technology aimed at turning Microsoft Corp.'s Pocket PCs into Wi-Fi cellphone replacements.

High-Speed Calling: Internet-Based Phone Service Goes Mainstream

    April 4, 2004

    By Eve Mitchell

Noel Frank Likes to talk to his friends and family both in the U.S. and Canada. Now, the Oakland resident has found a way to talk to them as much as he wants without racking up a big long-distance bill.

Frank is one of the growing number of consumers making inexpensive voice calls via his high-speed Internet connection and a regular phone instead of the traditional phone network that has been around since the telephone was invented more than 125 years ago.

"I have family spread out around the U.S. and Canada. That was one of the reasons. And the other reason I'm doing it is for entrepreneurial activity. Some time the business I'm working on may end up on the East Coast," said Frank.
