Proposed Internet Phone Rules Upset SaskTel

April 13, 2004

By Kevin O'Connor

REGINA -- Saskatchewan Telecommunications is upset about proposed new rules for Internet phone service that it says may scuttle plans for an expansion of the service inside the province.

Last week, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) released its preliminary views on how Net phone service -- also known as Voice over Internet Protocol or VOIP -- should be regulated.
A final decision is expected later this year.

VOIP, perhaps the biggest thing to hit the telecommunications industry since cell phones, allows people to make cheap voice calls over a high-speed Internet connection using a special "IP" phone or a conventional phone-set attached to an adapter.

Vonage, an Edison, New Jersey, provider of broadband Internet phone service, said it has started operating in Canada. The Canadian Internet link is provided through GT Group Telecom Services Corp., whose parent company is 360networks of Vancouver, a stock market darling before it sank into insolvency as the dot-com boom faded about three years ago.

    Vonage Internet Comes To Canada

    April 13, 2004

    By Staff

Vonage, a U.S.-based provider of broadband Internet phone service, said yesterday it has started operating in Canada. The firm offers a basic residential phone plan for $19.99 a month, including 500 minutes of local, toll and long-distance calling throughout Canada and the United States. The growth of Internet phone services in Canada has strengthened the major phone companies' arguments that they should face less restrictive regulation in an increasingly competitive market.

Vonage Rings Up Canadian VoIP Opportunity

    April 13, 2004

    By Fawzia Sheikh

Vonage, an American broadband services provider, has partnered with Group Telecom to launch a service in Canada at the same time the CRTC has said it will likely regulate voice over IP the same as other phone services.

Edison, N.J.-based Vonage, which was attracted to the Canadian market for its high broadband consumption, is offering flat rates, Canadian billing, local phone numbers, 24-hour customer assistance and free services and hardware.
About 12 out of 100 Canadians have broadband connections, compared to roughly seven out of 100 Americans, according to 2002 data from Forrester Research in Cambridge, Mass.
