Session Controller Market To Explode

June 17, 2004

By Staff

BOSTON -- Carriers and service providers are increasingly using voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) for peering purposes to deliver new and enhanced services to consumers and enterprises. Incumbent service providers are introducing hosted IP telephony services for businesses, and Vonage has disrupted the industry landscape forcing the incumbent service providers to expedite their consumer VoIP offers.

By Ramon Ray

Ramon Ray, Smallbiztechnology.com and Norman Stevens, RedVitae, co-moderated the first Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Technology Special Interest Group - Remote Computing; Collaboration; Communication

Thanks to Time Warner Cable for letting us use their space for this meeting and the next three.

Norman started out by laying a very solid foundation and helping us know HOW we should go about deciding what technologies we might need.

It May Be Time To Answer The Call Of Voice Over Internet Protocol

June 15, 2004

By Andy Ihnatko

People ask me why I hate telephones so much. "They're just so...so...analog!" I tell them, putting the same tone of revulsion in my voice that you'd normally use when talking about eating a member of one's own species.

But now I may have to change my attitude, or at least come up with a new line. There's a new alternative to wireless and traditional landline technologies: the Voice over Internet Protocol.

Before VoIP, you couldn't say "phone calls over the Internet" without using air quotes. For convenience and practical utility, it resembled a real phone call about as closely as a two-man horse costume resembled Seabiscuit.

Senate To Begin Hearings On Internet Telephone

The U.S. Senate On Wednesday Is Scheduled To Begin Hearings On Internet Telephone Services, In What Could Be The First Step Toward Banning State Governments From Regulating The Fast-Growing Technology

June 14, 2004

By Declan McCullagh

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday is scheduled to begin hearings on Internet telephone services, in what could be the first step toward banning state governments from regulating the fast-growing technology.

Under discussion during the hearing will be a proposal introduced in April that would flatly ban state regulators from monkeying around with voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. The bill, called the VoIP Regulatory Freedom Act, says regulatory authority is "reserved solely to the federal government."

June 14, 2004

A New Broadband phone service lets you take your phone number with you no matter where you go. With a special phone adaptor your voice is converted from an analog signal to a digital one and sent over the Internet. Callers can use the same number to reach you whereever you are located.

Voipification (No, It's Not In the Dictionary . . .Yet)

June 14, 2004

By Brian M. Carney

BRUSSELS -- One of the least-appreciated advantages of living overseas is never having to answer the phone during dinner, only to hear, "Mr. Carney, we would like to offer you . . . ."

But one of the biggest disadvantages of being an expat is the phone bill. International calling is less expensive than it used to be, but keeping in touch with family and friends back in the U.S. was still taking a nice-size bite out of my budget every month -- until last January, when I sent away for a little black box called a voice-over-IP phone (VOIP) adapter and started routing my calls over the Internet.

The adapter plugs into my DSL modem, and the phone plugs into the adapter. A New Jersey-based start-up called Vonage provides the service, and voila! -- I have a phone in my apartment in Brussels that is assigned a number in the 917 area code. Friends and relatives in New York can call for the cost of a local call, and we can call them -- or anyone else, anywhere in the U.S. or Canada -- for a fixed monthly fee of around $30.

Vonage To Offer Wi-Fi Phone

June 14, 2004

By Greg Scoblete

Edison, N.J. — Internet telephony company Vonage will offer a Wi-Fi-enabled VoIP phone in the fourth quarter to capitalize on what Michael Tribolet, executive VP/operations, said is the growing adoption of wireless home networks.

The Wi-Fi VoIP phone will compliment Vonage’s current broadband phone offering, which connects a regular home phone to a multi-terminal adapter (MTA), which is in turn connected to a cable/DSL modem. While the current device can work with a cordless phone if the base station is connected to the MTA, Tribolet said the Wi-Fi phone will incorporate the adapter in the handset, giving consumers one less piece of equipment to install.
