Push-To-Talk Boosts SIP App Development

June 22, 2004

By Staff

Push-to-talk technology is a prime area for expansion of the Session Initiation Protocol in 2004, one of its authors said Tuesday at the SIP Summit.

The summit, a conference-within-a-conference produced by Jeff Pulver of Vonage fame, kicked off Tuesday at Supercomm in Chicago's McCormick Center.

Frequent industry speaker Jonathan Rosenberg, who coauthored the text-based VOIP protocol, counted Vonage's adoption of it among its most prominent gains. Rosenberg, who is chief technology officer at Parsippany, N.J.-based dynamicsoft Inc., went on to pinpoint areas for SIP's growth in 2004, with push-to-talk technology chief among them.

VoIP Ready For The Masses?

June 22, 2004

By Wolfgang Gruener

Chicago (IL) - With 27 million broadband connection in the US installed, Voice-over-IP (VoIP) has become an attractive alternative to the traditional phone line. Providers such as Vonage lure users with flat-fee pricing and a growing feature set. Is it ready to substitute your primary phone line?

It is unlikely that you ready technology news and don't stumble at least once a day across a VoIP story. Making phone over Internet is not just a toy for geeks anymore, but rather has evolved into a mass market tool which takes advantage of the rapid deployment of broadband.

According to analysts, VoIP is just about at the stage where it is leaving the early-adopter-only phase and entering the mass market. Vonage, the prime example of a rapidly developing VoIP company, has grown to about 175,000 customers across the US, adding more than 21,000 new users every month. The incumbents try to catch up.

UTStarcom Adds Customer, Features

June 22, 2004

By Staff

UTStarcom has further cemented its presence in North America with a new deal with Vonage and new product capabilities.

The company will provide its 8250 Personal Communications Management System to Vonage.

UTStarcom also has improved upon that platform, by releasing version 6.2 of the PCMS, which integrates voice services with enhanced features with unified messaging on one platform. The new version allows voice mail services over the PSTN, Internet, broadband network or wireless network from any type of device.

In addition, the vendor introduced a gigabit Ethernet PON product line for the fiber-to-the-premises market. The carrier class EPON BBS 1000 aims to provide high subscriber density and low cost of entry.

The Question Of Balancing The Present-Day Economic Realities Of Voice-Over-IP Deployment Vs. Future Revenue Opportunities

June 22, 2004

By Staff

CHICAGO--The question of balancing the present-day economic realities of voice-over-IP deployment vs. future revenue opportunities was the subject of “The Service Provider Bottom Line: Does VoIP Really Pay Off?,” the first general panel session of Monday’s Telephony-hosted “VoIP Service Providers Strategy” conference.

According to Skyline Marketing President John Celentano, who led off the panel with a slide presentation, service providers have few if any choices but to spend the money necessary to deploy VoIP services, citing increased competition, customer demand and VoIP’s potential for reducing provider capex and opex spending as the drivers mandating network evolution. Celentano said that in an environment where telcos are already losing POTS and Internet market share to cable in addition to the threat of local competition from the likes of power companies and municipalities, new technologies and business models like VoIP are a must for continued survival.

Area Codes Still Carry Cachet (And 312 Can Be Yours)

June 21, 2004

By Sandra Jones

Area-code envy is about to go the way of the rotary phone.
An up-and-coming service that sends phone calls over the Internet is making it possible to select an area code as easily as choosing business card stock.

Economist David Jarczyk is working on getting all of the employees at Ceteris Inc. — a Libertyville-based economics research firm with offices in several states — onto area code 312, a moniker that clearly says "the Loop."

"In business, having a number in Chicago or New York can be very important," he says. "I work with people all the time who have a New Jersey phone number and say they're calling from New York, and I know they're not in New York."

A New Kind Of State's Rights

June 21, 2004

By Donny Jackson

For more than a century, most telecom regulation has come from the states. That changed somewhat with the passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which granted the FCC greater powers.

Still, states continued to play a key role in the voice-calling arena, particularly after the FCC released its Triennial Review Order last year. Key components of the TRO called for state commissions to oversee detailed studies of the telecom marketplace and determine where CLECs were impaired. The aggressive, nine-month timeline created mountains of work for state commission staff members, but the TRO represented a high watermark for state commissions' authority.

VOIP Makes Competitors, Regulators Take Notice

June 20, 2004

By Rocky Scott

It has come to this: Your home phone, relegated to gathering dust in the corner because of the wireless revolution, has dusted itself off and become the latest trend in telecommunications technology.

"Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) lets you take your home phone with you, even overseas," said Mitchell Slepian, a spokesman for Vonage Inc., a New Jersey company that has led the way in transmitting phone calls over the internet.

Here's how VOIP works: a company provides you with a small multimedia box that attaches to your DSL modem, your cable box or, via Ethernet, to a T-1 or T-3 line.

Telecoms Warm To Internet Calls, But Hype High

June 17, 2004

By Justin Hyde

WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters) - If there's one technology that's likely to dominate the hype at the telecommunications industry's SuperComm conference next week, Internet phone service is it.

And for all those rushing into it, that could mean trouble.
Some industry observers watching the push for voice over Internet protocol, or VOIP, see a brighter future for the companies selling Internet voice transmission equipment than the ones trying to use VOIP to vault into telephone services.

Session Controller Market To Explode

June 17, 2004

By Staff

BOSTON -- Carriers and service providers are increasingly using voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) for peering purposes to deliver new and enhanced services to consumers and enterprises. Incumbent service providers are introducing hosted IP telephony services for businesses, and Vonage has disrupted the industry landscape forcing the incumbent service providers to expedite their consumer VoIP offers.
