USTA’s McCormick To Regulators: Get Out Of The Way

June 23, 2004

By Donny Jackson

CHICAGO--With the maturation of voice over IP technology and with most consumers having several broadband options, the time has come for policymakers to adopt rules that largely deregulate telecom carriers, the chief of the United States Telecom Association told Telephony today.

Many telecom regulations were justified when phone companies had monopoly power, but that’s no longer the case, thanks to competition via cable, mobile wireless, satellite, wireless broadband providers and, eventually, broadband over power line, according to USTA President and CEO Walter McCormick.

SUPERCOMM 2004 Highlights:Nortel, Texas Instruments Team For VoIP Improvement

June 23, 2004

By Staff

Nortel and Texas Instruments (TI) announced at the SUPERCOMM 2004 trade show that they are teaming to improve the interoperability of VoIP equipment.

The network gear maker and chip and software maker hope to increase the adoption of services based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), a signaling protocol for internet conferencing, telephony, presence, events notification and instant messaging. SIP initiates call setup, routing, authentication and other feature messages to endpoints within an IP domain. Nortel has been active in SIP standards groups for about four years. TI will adapt its designs to work with Nortel Networks' multimedia communications portfolio, including the Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 and 5200. In addition, the Dallas based company will integrate the MCS platform into its system test lab to test its Telogy Software for VoIP with the MCS, thereby shortening design time.

Internet Phone Service Destined To Grow
Recent Rulings Favor The New Technology

June 22, 2004

By Leslie Brooks Suzukamo

With no federal rules forcing them to share their networks with upstart phone companies, what's to stop the Baby Bells from squeezing out competitors and raising your phone bill again?

In a word, it may be VoIP.

VoIP — which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol — is an acronym from the computer geek's vocabulary that consumers will be hearing more often from their telephone and cable providers over the next few years.

Push-To-Talk Boosts SIP App Development

June 22, 2004

By Staff

Push-to-talk technology is a prime area for expansion of the Session Initiation Protocol in 2004, one of its authors said Tuesday at the SIP Summit.

The summit, a conference-within-a-conference produced by Jeff Pulver of Vonage fame, kicked off Tuesday at Supercomm in Chicago's McCormick Center.

Frequent industry speaker Jonathan Rosenberg, who coauthored the text-based VOIP protocol, counted Vonage's adoption of it among its most prominent gains. Rosenberg, who is chief technology officer at Parsippany, N.J.-based dynamicsoft Inc., went on to pinpoint areas for SIP's growth in 2004, with push-to-talk technology chief among them.

VoIP Ready For The Masses?

June 22, 2004

By Wolfgang Gruener

Chicago (IL) - With 27 million broadband connection in the US installed, Voice-over-IP (VoIP) has become an attractive alternative to the traditional phone line. Providers such as Vonage lure users with flat-fee pricing and a growing feature set. Is it ready to substitute your primary phone line?

It is unlikely that you ready technology news and don't stumble at least once a day across a VoIP story. Making phone over Internet is not just a toy for geeks anymore, but rather has evolved into a mass market tool which takes advantage of the rapid deployment of broadband.

According to analysts, VoIP is just about at the stage where it is leaving the early-adopter-only phase and entering the mass market. Vonage, the prime example of a rapidly developing VoIP company, has grown to about 175,000 customers across the US, adding more than 21,000 new users every month. The incumbents try to catch up.

The Question Of Balancing The Present-Day Economic Realities Of Voice-Over-IP Deployment Vs. Future Revenue Opportunities

June 22, 2004

By Staff

CHICAGO--The question of balancing the present-day economic realities of voice-over-IP deployment vs. future revenue opportunities was the subject of “The Service Provider Bottom Line: Does VoIP Really Pay Off?,” the first general panel session of Monday’s Telephony-hosted “VoIP Service Providers Strategy” conference.

According to Skyline Marketing President John Celentano, who led off the panel with a slide presentation, service providers have few if any choices but to spend the money necessary to deploy VoIP services, citing increased competition, customer demand and VoIP’s potential for reducing provider capex and opex spending as the drivers mandating network evolution. Celentano said that in an environment where telcos are already losing POTS and Internet market share to cable in addition to the threat of local competition from the likes of power companies and municipalities, new technologies and business models like VoIP are a must for continued survival.

Area Codes Still Carry Cachet (And 312 Can Be Yours)

June 21, 2004

By Sandra Jones

Area-code envy is about to go the way of the rotary phone.
An up-and-coming service that sends phone calls over the Internet is making it possible to select an area code as easily as choosing business card stock.

Economist David Jarczyk is working on getting all of the employees at Ceteris Inc. — a Libertyville-based economics research firm with offices in several states — onto area code 312, a moniker that clearly says "the Loop."

"In business, having a number in Chicago or New York can be very important," he says. "I work with people all the time who have a New Jersey phone number and say they're calling from New York, and I know they're not in New York."
