Vonage Records Regulatory Victory

July 1, 2004

By Colin C. Haley

A federal magistrate is poised to issue a preliminary injunction blocking New York officials from regulating broadband telephony upstart Vonage.

Magistrate Judge Douglas F. Eaton of the U.S. District Court announced late Wednesday his intent to rule against the New York Public Service Commission (PSC), and he is expected to release a written order shortly. He may also consider making the injunction permanent. A hearing to consider that move would likely come in January, Vonage said.

Come Together
As Telecom Companies Race To Integrate Wireless Capability, Mobile Calling Could Get Even Better

July 1, 2004

By Mike Hogan

Two of the year's fastest-growing technologies are on a collision course: wireless LANs and VoIP.

It's no secret how popular WLANs have become at work, and, of course, Wi-Fi hot spots are popping up everywhere from Starbucks to McDonald's. After downloading e-mail and Web browsing, one of the most promising uses of WLANs is digital voice calls (VoWLAN).

Industry Leaders Introduce First Total VOIP Solution That Works For The Small To Mid-Size Business (SMB) Customer

NetFabric Joins with CoMatrix and Vonage to Train VARs and Interconnects in Southern California to Sell VoIP Solutions to SMBs

ANAHEIM, CA and Edison, NJ - June 29, 2004 - NetFabric Corporation, the leading developer of products that enable VoIP applications for the SMB market; CoMatrix, a forward-looking distributor of communications products to the nation's reseller market; and Vonage, the leading broadband telephony company, today announced VoIP NOW, a technical and sales training session for 100-plus resellers in Southern California to be held June 29 at CoMatrix West in Anaheim.

NetFabric recently introduced its new Cashmere line of VoIP Intelligent Call Routers that, for the first time, make delivering VoIP solutions a simple turnkey operation that appeals to VARs and Interconnects alike. Vonage, one of the nation's best-known VoIP Service Providers (VSPs), is developing this market through partnerships like the one it established with CoMatrix and sees NetFabric's products as an innovative approach that enables it to leverage traditional telephony channels.

Vonage® Wins Preliminary Injunction Against New York PSC

Edison, NJ, June 30, 2004
– Today, Magistrate Judge Douglas F. Eaton, United States District Court (Southern District of New York) announced his intention to enjoin the New York Public Service Commission (PSC) from regulating Vonage as a telecommunications carrier. The written order is expected shortly. The judge will consider the merits of a permanent injunction in January 2005.

Reinforcing Minnesota District Judge Davis’ October 2003 order enjoining a similar attempt by that state to regulate Vonage, the preliminary injunction will preclude the State of New York from asserting its jurisdiction over Vonage.

“We are satisfied with the court’s decision and believe this is a positive step forward for New Yorkers and the industry,” said Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage Holdings Corporation. “Vonage remains eager and committed to working with the states, Congress and the FCC to create a national framework for this emerging industry.”

FCC's Powell Reassures VOIP Community

June 23, 2004

By Ellen Muraskin

CHICAGO — Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell gave VOIP service providers more reason to relax Tuesday at Supercomm 2004 here.

In an on-stage interview in McCormick Place's grand ballroom with Matthew Flanagan, president of the Telecom Industry Association, Powell reiterated his well-known aversion to regulating developing telecom technologies like voice over IP, while acknowledging the federal government's role as manager of licensed spectrum and overseer of equal access to broadband.
