First Broadband Telephony Provider to Reach 200,000 Line Milestone

Edison, NJ, July 13, 2004 – Vonage, the leading broadband telephony provider, today announced the activation of 200,000 total lines on its network, doubling its subscriber-base in less than six months since reaching the 100,000 line mark.

“Again, Vonage has set the benchmark, proving its value proposition to a marketplace starved for full-featured, cost-effective alternatives to the incumbent local exchange carriers,” said Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage Holdings Corporation. “We have consistently doubled our customer-base every six months and expect to exceed year end estimates by a wide margin.”

Vonage® Now Offers Customers Seven Digit Local Dialing

Edison, NJ, July 7
– Vonage, the leading broadband telephony provider today announced it is now offering its subscribers seven digit dialing within the same area code for local calls in the U.S. and Canada. For example, customers in New York City’s (212) area code can now dial xxx-xxxx, instead of 1-(212)-xxx-xxxx.

“Once again, Vonage has stepped up to the plate and answered its customer’s needs, as many have been asking for seven digit dialing to make it easier and quicker to dial local friends and family,” stated Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage.

Leveraging the power of customers’ existing broadband connections, Vonage sets the standard for the new generation of phone service with the most competitive residential and small business calling plans:

FCC's Powell: It's Time To Throw Out Old Regulations

July 14, 2004

By Matt Hicks

PALO ALTO, Calif.-By trying to fit companies into old regulatory categories, the U.S. government is picking winners and losers in the telecommunications industry, said the country's top communications regulator here on Tuesday.

The Federal Communications Commission must follow laws that categorize companies based on the various types of telecommunications pipes-from the wireline phone network to coaxial cable-even though the companies increasingly are blurring the distinctions, said FCC Chairman Michael Powell.

Government Oversight And Protecting VoIP

July 15, 2004

By Sonia Arrison

Sununu's bill, called the VoIP Regulatory Freedom Act, would put an end to this state meddling, although it would still force VoIP firms that connect to the public phone network to "contribute, directly or indirectly," to universal service. Of course, state regulators aren't the only ones targeting VoIP.

The Senate Commerce Committee will soon vote on a bill to bar states from meddling with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which allows the Internet to be used like a telephone.

US VoIP Provider Vonage Plans UK Launch This Year

July 15, 2004

By Staff

The US's largest broadband telephony provider is planning to launch in the UK later this year, which could force telcos to re-price their fixed-line voice calls and broadband subscription rates.

Vonage has 170,000 active users in the US and claims to host a total of 5m calls a week. After a successful launch in Canada, the residential Voice-over-IP (VoIP) service provider is planning to expand into Europe, and intends to target the UK market before the end of 2004.

"We've always been determined to expand worldwide, specifically into countries with great broadband penetration," said Louis Holder, executive VP for product development at Vonage. "The UK will be our first country to target as it's English speaking, has well-established currency issues for billing, and has good broadband penetration and awareness."

Senate Commerce Committee To Vote On Internet Phone Bill

July 16, 2004

By Josh Long

The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation chaired by Arizona Republican John McCain on Tuesday will vote on a bill that would prohibit states from imposing taxes and fees on Internet-based phone service and place the technology under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

Committee members could reject the bill or make amendments to the VoIP Regulatory Freedom Act of 2004, a bill New Hampshire Republican John Sununu introduced in April. The Senate Commerce Committee is comprised of 12 Republicans and 11 Democrats, according to Sununu communications director Barbara Riley.

Money: Chat For Less

July 19, 2004

By Linda Stern

July 19, 2004 issue - All that phone-company competition was nice while it lasted, but now long-distance rates are going up. Sprint Sense customers will see a new $3.95-a-month fee on their bill next month, while MCI is hiking several of its plans. Don't stop talking to the family, but do think about cutting your calling costs:
