Vonage Raises Another $105 Million In Financing
The Latest Round Of Funding Underscores The Private Equity World's Enthusiasm For VOIP, Or Voice Over Internet Protocol, Services

August 25, 2004

By Stephanie Mehta

Vonage, the fast-growing company that delivers telephone calls over the Internet, is expected to announce today that it has raised an additional $105 million in financing. The privately held company, based in Edison, N.J., has raised $208 million to date.

The latest round of funding underscores the private equity world's enthusiasm for Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VOIP, services. Vonage offers consumers the ability to make and receive phone calls over broadband connections such as cable modems or DSL lines.

By Tony Smith

WLAN kit makers Linksys and Netgear have rolled out consumer and small-business oriented wireless access points with integrated Voice over IP (VoIP) support.

Linksys' WRT54GP2 provides a pair of VoIP phone ports alongside the usual broadband, wired and 802.11g connectivity. The company also unveiled its PAP2 phone adaptor, which sits between the handsets and a regular router, wireless or otherwise.

Voice On The Cheap
VoIP Makes Telephony Affordable For Anyone With A Broadband Connection

August 1, 2004

By Michael Cahlin

Forget everything you think you know about making telephone calls over the Internet. Today’s Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, has as much in common with yesterday’s lousy service as a Commodore 64 does with a modern PC.

Smarter technologies, faster Internet connections, more widespread use of wireless routers, and lower prices are calling consumers to digital dialing.

This growing popularity is causing fierce competition between traditional telecom and cable companies like AT&T, Qwest, Timer Warner Cable, and Sprint, and VoIP-only providers such as Vonage, Net2Phone, Packet8, and Skype.

Internet Calling Gaining Ground

August 1, 2004

By Jason Gertzen

Jon Byman was considered a technology pioneer a couple years ago when he hung up his local telephone service and began making calls over the Internet.

Although Internet-based telephone systems still don't have many residential subscribers, their popularity is increasing. Such calling will become more common as communications giants AT&T Corp. and Time Warner Cable begin selling the service in Wisconsin and across the country.

Ten Big Money-Savers

August 1, 2004

By Beverly Goodman and Matthew Heimer

Saving money, alas, usually means sacrifice: wearing that tattered coat another year, turning down the thermostat.

That's why most of us can't shake the spending habit. So here are some relatively painless ways to rack up big savings over a roughly five-year period.

Taking The Plunge Into VoIP

August 5, 2004

By David Chernicoff

I recently went through the unpleasant experience of moving my home. Added to the general annoyance of such a move is the fact that I work at home, so I also had to move my home office--which contains a significant amount of computer hardware and networking equipment. Planning and a little help from a friend made the home-office move go smoothly, but the single most annoying thing to move was something I had no control over: my telephones.
