Taking The Plunge Into VoIP

August 5, 2004

By David Chernicoff

I recently went through the unpleasant experience of moving my home. Added to the general annoyance of such a move is the fact that I work at home, so I also had to move my home office--which contains a significant amount of computer hardware and networking equipment. Planning and a little help from a friend made the home-office move go smoothly, but the single most annoying thing to move was something I had no control over: my telephones.

First Broadband Telephony Provider to Reach 200,000 Line Milestone

Edison, NJ, July 13, 2004 – Vonage, the leading broadband telephony provider, today announced the activation of 200,000 total lines on its network, doubling its subscriber-base in less than six months since reaching the 100,000 line mark.

“Again, Vonage has set the benchmark, proving its value proposition to a marketplace starved for full-featured, cost-effective alternatives to the incumbent local exchange carriers,” said Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage Holdings Corporation. “We have consistently doubled our customer-base every six months and expect to exceed year end estimates by a wide margin.”

Practical Mac
Average User Not Likely To Pounce On Tiger

July 3, 2004

By Glenn Fleishman

Assume the crouching Tiger pose for at least six months. Apple showed a preview of its next operating-system release, Mac OS X 10.4, which it will spring upon us in the first half of 2005. That could mean up to a year from today.

With Panther purring along, Tiger's biggest impact will be on owners of Power Mac G5 computers, which Apple expects to sell quite a few of before Tiger ships. Tiger will take full advantage of the 64-bit G5 processor's power; Panther does not.

VoIP Developing Big Retail Presence

July 7, 2004

By Scott Sleek

VoIP equipment and services are becoming a growing presence at the retail level, showing up on shelves at consumer electronics stores and online catalogs.

The latest evidence of this was unveiled 7/7, when international IP phone manufacturer Twister Networks opened what it claims to be the country’s first retail store dedicated solely to VoIP products and services. Located in the town of Garden Grove, CA, the store operates under the name Nettel.

Judge Halts NY PSC From Regulating Vonage Service

July 7, 2004

By Cheryl Bolen

U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Eaton announced his intention to enjoin the New York State Public Service Commission from regulating Vonage Corp., a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service provider, as a telephone company, the company announced late June 30.

On May 19, the New York commission declared that Edison, N.J.-based Vonage was a telephone company as defined by state law, and ordered the company to obtain a certificate to operate in the state.

New Bill Would Place VoIP Under FCC Regulation

New Bill Would Place VoIP Under FCC Regulation --Aka VoIP -- Become An Interstate Service Subject To Regulation By The Federal Government Rather Than Individual States

July 7, 2004

By Erika Morphy

Two members of the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced legislation that would make VoIP an interstate service.

Sponsored by Cliff Stearns (R-Florida), who chairs the Subcommittee on Commerce, and Rick Boucher (D-Virginia), who chairs the House Internet Caucus, the "Advanced Internet Communications Services Act" would place authority for VoIP regulation with the FCC rather than with the states, thus avoiding the legal question of whether it is an information or a telecom service.
