Internet Phone Call Firm Gets $105 Mil Venture Capital Infusion

August 26, 2004

By Reinhardt Krause

Internet calling upstart Vonage Holdings — fighting regulatory and marketing battles — has a lot more money to spend on lawyers and advertising.

The startup phone company said Wednesday that it has raised $105 million in a new financing round led by venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates.

Overall, Vonage has raised more than $208 million from private investors, including venture firms NEA, 3i and Meritech Capital.

Vonage has signed up 200,000 customers in the U.S. and Canada for its Internet phone service. It plans to expand into the U.K., Pacific Rim and Latin America.

VoIP Startup Vonage Collects $105M

August 26, 2004

By Clifford Carlsen

Investors in Internet telephony startup Vonage Holdings Corp. doubled down on their private equity stake in the company, sinking $105 million into the year's largest venture capital deal to date, bringing total investment to $208 million.

New Enterprise Associates led the Series D round to help the independent company maintain a commanding lead in voice-over-Internet-protocol, or VoIP, services. The massive funding round from the startup's existing investors comes even as traditional telephone and wireless service carriers such as Bedminster, N.J.-based AT&T Corp., New York-based Verizon Communications Inc., Qwest Communications International Inc.of Denver and San Antonio-based SBC Communications Inc. enter the fast-growing field.

 Vonage doubled its venture capital

Vonage In Print News

Venture Market Summary

August 26, 2004

By Scott Austin

Vonage, a company that enables customers to make phone calls using a touch-tone phone over an Internet connection, undoubtedly ruffled a few feathers Tuesday in the traditional phone business.

Vonage doubled its venture capital backing with a $105 million Series D round, as investors race to pour money in a space with no clear leader and ripe for competition. Lead investor New Enterprise Associates injected $40 million to make it the company's second largest shareholder, under founder and technology pioneer Jeffrey Citron; 3i said Vonage is now the firm's largest U.S. investment; and Meritech Capital Partners claimed its investment is one of the largest deals in the fund's history.

A Price War Hits Internet Calling
Competition And Low Cost Of Service Spur Array Of Deals In Nascent Telecom Sector

August 26, 2004

By ShawnYoung

Fierce price competition is hitting the fast-growing Internet phone-calling business.

Consumers are used to prices of many new technologies eventually falling. But with Internet phone calls, the industry has begun to lower its rates at a remarkably early stage, reflecting the low cost of providing the service and the cutthroat nature of the phone business.

AT&T Corp. recently extended an introductory offer of $19.95 a month for its CallVantage service, which offers unlimited local and long-distance calling, through the end of September. Earlier, Vonage Holdings Corp., the pioneer in Internet calling, shaved $5 off the price of its primary service, which is now $29.99 a month.
