Wait Till Next Year
Not So Ga-Ga Over Google? This Season's IPOs Left You Cold? Cheer Up -- 2005 Looks Hotter

August 30, 2004

By Constance Loizos

THE TERM "INITIAL PUBLIC OFFERING" has this year become almost synonymous with one company: Google. While the klieg lights still shine on the much-obsessed-about search engine that just went public, venture capitalists already are pondering the IPO class of 2005. With good reason. That class could be much stronger than this year's.

Many of its members boast virtues frequently absent from companies entering the public arena. Some have recurring -- and growing -- revenue streams. Most have solid, experienced management teams. And some are even profitable, or at least nearly so.

In fact, many outfits that could float initial offerings next year have more compelling stories than other companies already trading on Nasdaq.

Vonage VOIP Phone To Run Over Wi-Fi Networks

August 30, 2004

By Carmen Nobel

Small businesses mapping out WLAN strategies will soon have another alternative to consider, as broadband telephony provider Vonage Holdings Corp. makes its way into the industry with its own hardware and through partnerships with Linksys and Netgear Inc.

Vonage last week announced plans to release by year's end a VOIP (voice-over-IP) phone that runs over Wi-Fi networks. While initial plans call for targeting home- and small-office customers, Vonage will eventually serve international business travelers.

How-To: Use A Pocket PC PDA As A WiFiphone

August 31, 2004

By Phillip Torrone

This week’s How-To is a handy one for the folks out there who use the Vonage Voice Over IP (VOIP) service and happen to have a Pocket PC device with WiFi. We’re going to show you how to turn just about any Pocket PC PDA device in to a real telephone with a working telephone number. At the end of this, we’re also going to post our phone number so you can test it out (it might be a long distance call for you).

    Ingredients for this How-To:

Market Leader Vonage Weighs Its Options

August 9, 2004

By Andrew McMains

NEW YORK - Still in its infancy, voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) telephone service has the potential to replace or at least rival traditional land-line service. And since it can be delivered via broadband and cable, the number of consumer options is growing.

Staying ahead in a rapidly growing market will be a major mission for the winner or winners of category leader Vonage's $50-75 million marketing-services review, launched last week [Adweek Online, Aug. 5].

Vonage is shopping around for an agency to market its VoIP service, budgeting out $50-75mln. The company has contacted about 20 ad agencies and media buyers, with responses due back by the end of the month. Vonage spent less than $5mln in advertising last year and just a little north of $1mln in the 1st 6 six months of this year.

Why The Web May Replace Your Phone
On The Fringe For More Than A Decade, A Cheap, Flexible Internet-Based Phone Service Is Poised To Take Off

August 12, 2004

By Gregory M. Lamb

VoIP. Pronounced "voip," it sounds as silly as it looks. But in the world of telVoecommunications, it's becoming a serious business that could change the way you make a phone call.

Rather than depending on telephone lines, VoIP - or Voice over Internet Protocol - would allow you to use the Web. It might pave the way for a new, more flexible wireless service. And it's cheap: You could reach Nanjing for the price of calling next door.

Net Effect: Lower Phone Bills

August 13, 2004

By Eric De Regnaucourt

Douglas Mayle, an American software developer who lives on the French Riviera, has several phone numbers -- including two in cyberspace that carry U.S. area codes.

When he wants to call friends or family back home, he uses an ordinary phone that's attached to a box connected to his computer. When friends and family in the U.S. want to call him, they dial using one of his U.S. numbers and he answers on that same phone. In both directions, it's a domestic call -- in some cases a local one.

"It saves me hundreds each month," Mr. Mayle says, and it saves the people calling him as well. Mr. Mayle can take his U.S. numbers anywhere he can get an Internet connection with enough bandwidth (at home he has a DSL connection).
It's a long distance between the U.S. and Europe -- but an Internet-based telephone service can turn an overseas phone call into a local one. The same technology can slash the cost of calling within Europe.
