Features/Your Telecom Bill: Telephony That's Not Phony
Internet Phone Calls: The New "Ringy-Dingy"?

September 1, 2004

By Cybele Weisser

The newest Internet revolution has arrived. You can now make and receive phone calls via a high-speed Internet connection by subscribing to a service known as voice over Internet protocol. VOIP, for short, allows for a host of whiz-bang features--like having your voice mail sent to you via e-mail--previously impossible with traditional landline phones. Better still: For as little as $ 20 a month (about a third of what the average U.S. consumer spends on local and long distance) you can make unlimited calls with features such as caller ID, call forwarding and three-way calling. Thanks to its growing popularity--already, about half a million people have signed up--Verizon and Time Warner Cable have rolled out Internet phone services.

Great Expectations

September 1, 2004

By Amanda C. Kooser

Think your business technology is all that and a bag of microchips? Well, it's not. Chances are, you need an upgrade. Here's a preview of the technologies that will change the way your company works.

It's that time of year when we get the old crystal ball out of storage, polish it up, and try to divine where business technology is headed in 2005. We can definitely report that entrepreneurs won't be commuting with jet packs, and cleaning robots won't be standard in most offices. But technologies like Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), tablet PCs, Ultrawideband (UWB), VoIP and Wi-Fi are poised to make news. More important, some of them will have an impact on your business.

Let's Be Reasonable
There's No Need To Drop An Insane Amount Of Money On Office Equipment With These Bargain-Finding Secrets

September 1, 2004

By Amanda C. Kooser

When you're starting your new business, you have to decide how to allocate your budget. Technology can eat up a significant portion of your startup capital. We're going to look at how you can reduce budget strain and still outfit your office with quality equipment.

Here's an example of what smart shopping can do. Say you decide to buy a 15-inch LCD. Now say you choose a Samsung SyncMaster 152N. Would you rather pay $270 or $434? This isn't a trick question; this is about finding the best deal. And $434 is the price one online store was selling this monitor for recently. A new 152N recently closed at $270 on eBay. Of course, eBay isn't always the answer. Stay tuned as we explore the ways you can get your startup going on a tight budget.

Summer's Venture Deals

September 1, 2004

By George White

Summertime usually marks a slowdown in venture capital investing, with dealflow slowing to a virtual crawl at times. And while the summer of 2004, did see its fair share of slow weeks, the past three months have also turned out some of the year's largest deals.

Of the ten largest venture fundings in 2004, four came in the last three months, including the largest deal of the year, a $105 million Series D round for Internet telephony startup Vonage Holdings Corp.

States Need A Telecom Reality Check

September 1, 2004

By Steven Titch

Nothing spooks legislators more than the loss of tax revenue, and nothing threatens public utility commissioners more than the loss of power.

VoIP--voice over Internet Protocol--does both.

That’s why since January, legislators and regulators have been scrambling to get a handle on how to tax and regulate VoIP, sometimes called Internet telephony, even as they struggle to define precisely what it is.
