Are Internet Phone Calls A New Frontier Or Just A Technological Tweak For An Old Service?

September 22, 2004

By Staff

GATINEAU, QUE. -- Are Internet phone calls a new frontier or just a technological tweak for an old service? That was the question before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission yesterday as it opened three days of hearings into the possibility of regulating such calls.

The hearings have drawn 31 groups, ranging from communications giants such as Bell and Rogers, to high-tech upstarts such as Telus and Vonage, already pushing ahead into Internet voice services. There also are consumer groups urging a cautious, rule-driven approach to the technology.

VOIP In Your Hands

September 22, 2004

By Greg Scoblete

For the last hundred years the home telephone was the gray flannel suit of home electronics -- consistent, reliable, functional and aggressively boring. With the rapid rise of the mobile phone, many industry prognosticators sounded the death knell for the boring old home phone, sweeping it into the dustbin of history in favor of its smaller, portable and feature-rich cellular successor.

The doomsayers are right, of course. The home telephone as we know it is dead (or, put charitably, dying), but home communications is on the brink of a sweeping and dramatic revolution that will transform the way we converse and interact.

The revolution comes courtesy of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology and the thousands of miles of fiber and coaxial that connects us to the Internet.

TI Announces WLAN IP Phone Platform

September 22, 2004

By Staff

Texas Instruments announced the addition of an integrated platform for the development of a high-performance Wireless LAN (WLAN) IP phone, to its market leading suite of Voice over Broadband products. The fully integrated solution incorporates TI's Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and WLAN software and silicon, enabling developers to capitalize on the company's broadband and wireless expertise to quickly bring to market WLAN IP phones for enterprise and residential applications.

This technology will enable portable IP phones for use on WLAN networks, allowing users to roam throughout an enterprise campus or home. It will also enable users to receive emails and other data services on their WLAN IP phone, further extending the cost benefits and convenience associated with VoIP services.

VON: Conference Finds Signs Of Life On Planet IP

September 24, 2004

By Tim McElligott

BOSTON— Jeff Pulver, CEO of and host of this fall’s Voice on the Net conference here, opened the show yesterday with the explication of a new scientific discipline: bio-telecommunications. In identifying the difference between heteromorphic and homomorphic transformation—linking VoIP to the former—Pulver likened the IP communications industry to an emerging butterfly that has taken on a completely different form and therefore should not be treated like the traditional telecom world it leaves behind.

He declared IP communications the official nomenclature for the often-mislabeled industry, urging attendees to stop using the term Internet telephony because focusing on the word telephony is becoming a problem with regulators.

Consumers Like Flexibility And Low Cost - Telecom Firms Avoid Access Issues

September 24, 2004

By Clint Swett

When Shawn Cheris talks on the phone in his Sacramento home, he easily could forget his calls are being routed over the Internet, rather than via SBC's network.

"It's crystal clear," he said of the conversations he has over Vonage's Internet phone system that's hooked to his cable modem. "If anything, it's better than what I had before."

Although there are about only 1.1 million customers like Cheris in the United States, according to Frost & Sullivan analyst Jon Arnold, experts are predicting that VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) soon will gain enough traction in American households to pose a serious threat to traditional telephone service.

Downgrades Toll For 3 Baby Bells As Core Lines Weaken

September 27, 2004

By Ken Brown and Aaron Lucchetti

Not long ago, telephone companies were considered utilities and their bonds were only slightly more risky than a passbook savings account.

Today, the phone companies' product is viewed as a commodity in an increasingly crowded industry, and their widely held bonds are getting less respect.

Sometime in the next week, Standard & Poor's, citing a deterioration in their core phone businesses, likely will lower its credit rating for the three biggest Baby Bell telephone companies: Verizon Communications Inc., SBC Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. Such a move would be the first time the ratings firm has acted against these three companies at once.
