Sipura Technology Accelerates the Voice over IP (VoIP) Market

Vonage Press Releases

Sipura Technology Accelerates the Voice over IP (VoIP) Market by Providing Key Technology to Linksys

Broadband phone company Vonage is the first service provider to deploy the products to subscribers.

SAN JOSE, CA – September 20, 2004 – In a move certain to advance the availability and acceptance of its state of the art technology, Sipura Technology announced today that it has licensed internally developed hardware and software technology to Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems, Inc. to be incorporated in consumer and SOHO networking gear. United States based broadband phone company Vonage is immediately supporting the Linksys devices for their residential and business subscribers.

The first devices to hit the market are a standalone analog telephone adapter (ATA) and two broadband routers with integrated voice capability. Linksys is marketing these devices under the names PAP2, RT31P2 and WRT54GP2, respectively. Regular analog telephones and fax machines can be connected to the devices that, when provisioned with service, will be able to place and receive phone calls over a DSL or cable broadband Internet connection providing call savings along with advanced telephony services like three party conferencing, call waiting, caller ID and distinctive ringing.

Vonage Launches Mexico City Virtual Numbers

Vonage customers within the United States and Canada can now obtain telephone numbers from the Capital of the Aztec Empire

Vonage, the leading provider of broadband phone service, today announced the availability of virtual numbers with Mexico City-based phone numbers.

Vonage’s current and future customers can now select Mexico City-based virtual numbers for $4.99 USD/$7.99 CAD per month. Virtual Phone Numbers are inexpensive secondary numbers that ring to the primary Vonage line. Mexico City-based virtual numbers make it less expensive for friends, relatives and business professionals residing and working in Mexico's leading cultural and business sector to make calls to the U.S. and Canada. The people they are calling now have numbers local to their calling area.

Long Way From The Rotary Phone; Voice Over Internet Protocol Is Hottest New Way To Talk

September 5, 2004

By Judy Newman

When Andy Feest wants to make a phone call from his home, he can dial it on his cellular phone. But he has to step outside. Coverage for his carrier, AT&T Wireless, isn't strong enough to reach through the door of his house near the Bergamont subdivision in Oregon.

Feest could use his Verizon landline phone, but a recent problem with the wiring creates a hum that makes it hard to hear phone conversations.

So, much of the time, he reverts to his third phone system, Vonage, the one that runs over his high-speed Internet line.

Brits Prepare For VOIP Deluge

September 6, 2004

By Ray Le Maistre

U.K. telecom regulator Office of Communications (Ofcom) effectively gave the green light to voice-over-broadband competition today by ruling that service providers could provide geographic numbers (ones with area codes) to VOIP customers (see Ofcom Speaks Out On VOIP ).

The VoIP Debates; Are Roadblocks Standing In The Way Of VoIP?

September 7, 2004

By John R. Quain

Are roadblocks standing in the way of VoIP? Pioneering Voice over Internet Protocol companies like Vonage and old-school telecom companies like AT&T are racing to bring inexpensive VoIP services to consumers, and the number of VoIP users is on the rise. But regulators are at odds over how to tax the services.

Would You Buy A Phone From This Man? At Age 34, Jeffrey Citron Has Launched Two Successful Startups

September 7, 2004

By Stephanie N. Mehta

In the past 18 months streams of moneymen, technology analysts, and journalists have made their way to a drab office building in Edison, N.J.Here a tiny upstart called Vonage is upsetting the telecom industry by selling cheap phone service that travels over the Internet. It is an intriguing concept, but the curious don't come to check out Vonage's dumpy digs or even its technology, which turns out to be some software and a bunch of servers and computer screens. No, they trek to this middle-class suburb 30 miles south of New York City for one reason: to scrutinize Jeffrey A. Citron, Vonage's ferociously ambitious CEO and potentially telecom's next big thing.

The Future Of Phone Calls
Commentary: Virtual Numbers Changing All

September 8, 2004

By John C. Dvorak

BERKELEY, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- The basic technology is called voice-over-IP and it is referred to as VOIP.

Essentially it's a technology that routes phone calls using the Internet protocol, an IP address like the one your computer uses when it looks at websites.

Years ago it was discovered that analog conversations could be digitized and routed over computer networks completely negating the need for expensive phone switching gear. Most of those calling cards you can buy at Costco and the airport use this technology. That's why the cost per-minute is so cheap.

David Versus Goliath? Try Vonage Versus AT&T

September 11, 2004

By Scott Goldstein

You're probably already getting calls that have traveled most of the way to your phone over the Internet instead of traditional phone lines. More and more people are signing up for Internet phone service, drawn by the relatively low cost. It's a revolution that is being launched here in New Jersey by Edison-based newcomer Vonage and Ma Bell herself, AT&T in Bedminster-The field's most aggressive marketers.

This makes them David and Goliath rivals. The two companies offer competing calling plans and are charging into stores to make the hookup hardware for their respective systems widely available.

PC, Phone Home

September 12, 2004

By Art Janik

New technology that merges your phone and your computer — called voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP — is becoming more accessible, and easier to use, for New York callers.

Making telephone calls over the Internet isn't anything new — the technology was already in use in the late '90s with dial-up computers, allowing users to make, for example, long distance phone calls without paying long distance prices.

But the services were primitive, and broadband connections such as cable or DSL weren't widespread.
