Vonage(R) Launches Service in Kansas City

Full-Featured Flat-Rate Calling Comes to the Heart of America

EDISON, N.J., Dec. 7-- Vonage Holdings Corp., the leading provider of broadband phone service, today announced local availability of its service in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas.

High-speed Internet subscribers residing and working along the Missouri and Kansas state lines can now take advantage of Vonage's broadband phone service offering free unlimited local and long distance calling. Each plan includes the most popular features like call waiting, call forwarding and voicemail for one low, flat monthly rate. Vonage customers in the Heart of America can now keep their current numbers or choose telephone numbers within the popular (816) and (913) area codes.

"Residents and small businesses in the city known for its great steaks, jazz and the Yellow Brick Road, can now add Vonage's local service offering to its notoriety," said Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman & CEO of Vonage Holdings Corp. "Vonage is filling a need in the Kansas City market for affordable calling plans bundled with features they cannot get from their current local carrier."

Eighth Annual Entrepreneurship Conference

December 6, 2004

By Phil Benson & Petros Sakkis

The 8th Annual Entrepreneurship Conference broke all previous attendance records with over 500 participants. This year's conference featured keynote speeches from Jeffrey Citron, CEO of Vonage; David Morgan, founder of Real Media; and Josh Kopelman, founder of Half.com.

The morning keynote was a great start to the conference, with serial-entrepreneur Jeffrey Citron advising would-be entrepreneurs to be prepared to shake things up and avoid hosting reality TV shows (a reference to Wharton alum Donald Trump's recent financial troubles).

He also spoke about the importance of distribution, marketing, and customer focus as things that can make or break a new venture, and encouraged entrepreneurs to stay focused on their value proposition to the customer instead of on the naysayers, the hype, the competitive landscape or potential exit strategies. Citron talked about the types of opportunities that interest him most and the common themes were large potential markets with big, entrenched competitors who cannot change and adapt quickly to disruptive innovation. When asked how one should approach the regulatory environment, his response was (1) hire a lot of lawyers and (2) hire another group of lawyers to check their work.

Christmas Wish List

December 7, 2004

By Bambi Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - On Sunday evening, I was exasperated. I attribute it to spending both Saturday and Sunday holiday shopping!

Besides providing quality moments with friends, shopping is draining. I could bike ride two centuries over the weekend and have far more energy left over.

The honking horns; the parking-lot madness; the bustling crowds; the 10-people long lines at the registers; the aching arms weighed down with bags of presents.

These are the feelings of shopping discontent during the holiday season. Thank goodness for the Web, where the experience doesn't change no matter how busy those virtual registers are, especially over the next five days.

This week, online shopping is set to hit its peak traffic as consumers put in their orders early enough to ensure they'll be shipped before Christmas.

New Service Saves On Long Distance

December 6, 2004

By Craig Wolf

Just when you'd figured out cell phones, there's another player in the phone service arena.

It's called VoIP, or ''voice over Internet protocol,'' also known as IP telephony. Translation: phone calls over the Internet.

You'd better get used to it because it's spreading. It's big already and it's proving useful as yet another tool in the telephony toolbox.

Chief advantages are lower costs for long-distance and international calls, plus the ability to take your phone number with you while traveling.

Charles North has tried out voice over Internet protocol during demonstrations at a trade show held by the Poughkeepsie Area Chamber of Commerce, of which he is president.

Computer Calling

December 5, 2004

By Sam Kennedy

Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, promises to rewire the telephone industry.

Already, the technology has spawned startups and spurred the offspring of Ma Bell, including AT&T and Verizon, and cable companies, such as Comcast, to develop their own VoIP services.

Consumers, though, really only need to know one thing: VoIP allows you to plug your phone into the Internet and make cheap phone calls.

Independent VoIP provider Vonage, for example, offers unlimited calling throughout the United States for $25 a month. Additional savings can also be had.

Voice Over Internet Demand Grows

December 4, 2004

By Joel Palmer

WATERLOO --- It's the next big thing in Internet services.

It's the next big thing in telecommunications.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which allows users to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection, is gaining in popularity, though industry estimates show only about 200,000 homes have the service.

Companies are just starting to offer the technology in the Cedar Valley.

Cable companies like Mediacom, which years ago began offering high-speed Internet, are pushing for VoIP to add another service to its line, then being able to bundle phone, cable and Internet all on one bill to offer customers. Phone companies, meanwhile, are deploying the technology to stem the flow of people ditching traditional land lines for wireless phones.

Net Gain: Bush Extends Tax Ban

December 4, 2004

By Ryan J. Donmoyer and Scott Lanman

President George W. Bush signed a law renewing a ban on Internet access taxes, ensuring most customers of Microsoft Corp.'s MSN and Time Warner Inc.'s America Online won't see state and local levies on their monthly bill until at least 2007.

Proponents such as Sen. George Allen, R-Va., have said the moratorium, first enacted in 1998, would allow high-speed broadband technology to expand to rural areas and keep it affordable. Bush, who signed the bill in a private ceremony, has urged Congress to make it permanent.

Starting in 1998, federal law has blocked state and local taxes on Internet connections for customers of such companies as AOL and EarthLink Inc. Since a series of temporary measures lapsed in November 2003, state and local governments have stood pat, hesitant to impose new levies until Congress acted.
