The Internet Is Calling

PR News --December 20, 2004

By David P. Willis

Debbie Thompson of Freehold Township wasn't sold on the idea of using the Internet to make telephone calls.

"I didn't trust it. I thought you had to talk on your computer," said Thompson, 28. But her husband, John, convinced her, and now they are customers of Vonage, an Edison-based company that provides Internet telephone service.

"We got it because the phone bills were just so high we just couldn't take it anymore," said Thompson. Their monthly telephone bill, once about $95, is now about $20.

Americans Flood Online Stores As Holidays Approach

PR News --December 20, 2004

By Staff

RESTON, Va., Dec 20, 2004 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- comScore Media Metrix today released its monthly analysis of online consumer behavior, which reported that 128 million consumers visited sites in the Retail category in November 2004, representing fully 80 percent of the U.S. Internet population. Retail sites, such as those operated by KB Toys, Best Buy and Toys"R"Us, dominated this month's top gaining properties ranking, with monthly increases ranging from 45 percent to 155 percent.

"Consumers will spend more than $15 billion online this holiday season, but the Web's impact on retail extends far beyond its application as a direct selling medium," said Peter Daboll, president and CEO of comScore Media Metrix. "Tens of millions of Americans use the Internet to research products that they ultimately buy offline, helping make the shopping process more efficient and convenient than ever before."

Broadband Provider Expands Into Q-C Market

PR News --December 17, 2004

By Jennifer DeWitt

Vonage Holdings Corp., a broadband telephone company, has expanded service to the Quad-City area as part of a launch that broadens its reach across Iowa.

Vonage, based in Edison, N.J., provides phone service that runs over a high-speed Internet connection but allows the user to make calls from a regular home phone. “If you have high-speed Internet with an existing ISP or cable company, you can access Vonage,” said Mike Tribolet, the company’s executive vice president of operations.

Vonage’s advantage, he said, is it offers free unlimited local and long distance calling while providing popular phone features such as call waiting, call forwarding and voicemail for a flat monthly rate starting at $24.99. An introductory package is available for $14.99 a month.

South Of The Border

December 17, 2004

By David Cohn and Reuters

VoIP, or voice traffic over the internet, is headed for Mexico. While this is an opportunity for upstart telecommunications companies, the technology's increasingly widespread adoption creates a headache for traditional companies, who see pressure on their earnings as the cost of long-distance calls decline.

VoIP requires a high-speed broadband connection and has caught the eye of customers around the world because of its wider array of features compared with traditional telephony.

The introduction of the new service is already sending shockwaves among Mexican cable operators, whose technology, while ready for VoIP services, lacks the permits necessary to operate a public telecommunications network.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - VoIP, or voice traffic over the Internet, is headed for Mexico offering an opportunity for upstart telecommunications companies but a headache for traditional companies, who see pressure on their earnings as the cost of long distance calls decline.

Internet Telephony Regulation? Tell It To Uncle Sam

Vonage In Print News

Internet Telephony Regulation? Tell It To Uncle Sam

December 15, 2004

By Eric J. Sinrod

The FCC has just declared that DigitalVoice, an Internet telephony service provided by Vonage, is not subject to the patchwork of state regulations that govern telephone companies.

At the same time, the FCC declared that other IP-enabled services, including those offered by cable companies, that have characteristics similar to DigitalVoice, likewise are not covered by traditional state public utility regulation.

These FCC declarations build on earlier orders of the FCC regarding Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), helping to clarify that the FCC itself, and not state regulatory bodies, has the power to preempt state regulations on IP-enabled services that could interfere with federal authority over interstate communications.
