Vonage Veers To Video

December 9, 2004

By Alan Burkitt-Gray

VoIP provider Vonage has said it will sell video phones and a video phone service. CEO Jeffrey Citron didn’t provide an exact date but said it would sometime in the first quarter. To develop the videophone, Vonage has partnered with broadband video equipment maker Viseon, whose own product, the VisiFone II, debuts in January. Videoconferencing over broadband is a very small market, with total revenue this year expected to be a little over $40 million.

Edison, N.J.-based Vonage Holdings Inc. signed an agreement with Viseon Inc. to launch a videophone service early next year.

The companies did not disclose details of the new offering, which is expected to debut by next spring. Irving, Texas-based Viseon's first broadband videophone, which launched in December 2003, costs about $600, and service fees can run around $30 a month.

Vonage, which specializes in voice-over-Internet-protocol service, says it will target consumers and small businesses with the new phones.

Vonage, Viseon Put A Face On VoIP

December 9, 2004

By Colin C. Haley

Vonage, a Voice over IP upstart, and Viseon (Quote, Chart), a videophone specialist, are partnering to put a face on broadband telephony, the companies announced today. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The collaboration between the Edison, N.J., and Dallas companies will allow consumers and small businesses to make videophone calls anywhere in the world.

The phones will be offered through Vonage's Web site and 7,000 retailers nationwide beginning early next year, Vonage spokesman Mitchell Slepian told internetnews.com. Pricing has not yet been set.

Videophones have been hyped for decades, but technical limitations have bedeviled vendors and carriers. Broadband access and technical standards, such as Session Initiation Protocol , are changing that.

Video VoIP: Vonage Bets On Video

December 9, 2004

By Staff

Vonage has partnered with Viseon to promote a videophone package and service in Q1 2005. The phone is going to look a bit like this:

I think videophones and VoIP make a powerful combo and will popularize yet another acronym: VVoIP. The Apple iSight inserted new life into the videophone market a year ago, but carriers have been largely unenthused by the devices. I do think people will want this product/service - particularly travelers who want to stay in touch with loved ones (and possibly the office).

But I think a few things need to happen before this can become mass market:

Vonage To Offer Video Phone Service

December 9, 2004

By Martha McKay

Vonage is jumping into the nascent video phone market.

The aggressive, Edison-based Internet phone service provider is expected to announce today a plan to sell a video phone and service to consumers and small-business customers.

The deal involves a partnership with Viseon, of Dallas, a company that sells relatively low-cost video phones primarily to corporations, universities and government agencies. Viseon's Visifone sells for $ 600 and operates over any broadband connection.

The two companies plan to develop a new video phone for Vonage to sell.

Vonage's video phone service will be offered nationwide in early 2005, a company spokesman said. Pricing was not yet available.
