Vonage And Viseon Team Up On Videophone Service

December 10, 2004

By Brian Osbourne

Viseon was the first company to produce a consumer broadband videophone, the VisiFone, which is currently used by companies, governments, and educational institutions in the U.S. The next generation of the VisiFone, the VisiFone II, has been designed to work with VoIP services, and is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2005.

The new VisiFone II will be offered as a part of a partnership with Vonage, which will offer the new videophone on its website and at over 7,000 retail locations and online retailers nationwide. Viseon and Vonage will be marketing the next generation videophone to consumers and small businesses.

The benefit of this partnership is summed up by Vonage's chairman and CEO, Jeffrey A. Citron:

Vonage said it would develop a videophone service in partnership with broadband video equipment maker Viseon starting early next year. It said the phones and service, aimed at consumers and small businesses, would be sold through Vonage's website and at over 7,000 stores nationwide. "With Vonage's back-end SIP technology, offering video phones is a logical next step," a Vonage spokesman said. He said the company's network was "designed to support advanced features like the video phone."

Vonage Makes Video Calling Plans

December 9, 2004

By Arik Hesseldahl

NEW YORK - Vonage, one of the many companies behind the ever-more popular voice-over-Internet Protocol technology for making phone calls over the Web, disclosed today a partnership with a maker of video phones.

Under the deal with Viseon (otc: VSNI - news - people ), an Irving, Tex.-based manufacturer of video phones for VoIP, the two are developing a device that will be central to a new Vonage video calling service aimed at consumers and small businesses. The device will be unique, says Viseon Chief Executive John Harris, in that it won't require customers to use a personal computer to configure the calling preferences of their Vonage account.

Internet Calling Services Put Video Phone In Picture; VoIP Leader Gets The Jump; Broadband Phone Service Provider Vonage Says Time Ripe For Long-Awaited Era

December 9, 2004

By Reinhardt Krause

Vonage says people want to see whom they're talking to, not just make cheap voice calls.

The company, which sells low-cost, Internet-based phone service, on Thursday is expected to announce a pact with Viseon, a maker of video phones. Viseon's phones plug into fast, broadband Internet hookups.

Many service providers, including No. 1 cable firm Comcast, could be close behind. They've been testing video phones, a long-anticipated product that broadband is helping make a reality.

Privately held Vonage hopes to jump-start the video phone market just as it did Internet phone service. Edison, N.J.-based Vonage has signed up more than 260,000 consumers for its voice over Internet protocol services. It's the VoIP leader, though Comcast is just one of the big companies in, or about to enter, the field.

Internet Phone Firms Look To Profit On AT&T Failure

Internet Phone Firms Look To Profit On AT&T Failure

December 9, 2004

By Jeff May

When it comes to videophones and the American consumer, seeing is not always believing.

AT&T debuted the Picturephone, a telephone outfitted with a clunky, grainy video monitor, back in 1964. The company launched a commercial version of the service in 1970 in Pittsburgh, and predicted a million units would be in service within a decade.

The indifferent response from customers was humbling, and AT&T still bears the scars. While the company is pushing video e-mail with its Internet calling plans, it has shown little interest in marketing a full-fledged videophone service, despite changes in technology that make it a more reasonable proposition.

That hasn't stopped others from rushing into the breach, though. Vonage, the Edison-based Internet phone company, is expected to announce plans today to offer videophone service early next year.

 The Call To Voice

The Call To Voice

December 9, 2004

By Eric S. Brown

Voice over IP may be built upon broadband, but it doesn't need to follow the same anti-competitive path. In fact, the VoIP business could remain wild and wooly (and cheap).

One of the goals of the 1996 Telecommunications Act was to open up broadband access beyond cable and phone companies to alternative providers and technologies such as fixed-wireless and satellite.

Thanks to the phone and cable companies' clout in the U.S. government (and a few good loopholes), it didn't happen that way. The alternative broadband providers were pushed aside to niche markets, and broadband satellite and fixed-wireless services failed to take off.
