Vonage To Sell Its Service At CompUSA

PR News --December 21, 2004

By Staff

CompUSA will offer Vonage's service in all of its 200 plus nationwide stores throughout the United States and online at www.compusa.com.

High-speed Internet customers, who have a standard telephone, can sign up for Vonage service by purchasing one of two Vonage starter kits at CompUSA, featuring Linksys devices. These devices will allow customers to make calls in the U.S. and Canada for one low, flat monthly rate starting at $14.99. The devices are competitively priced and offer the consumer a $50.00 mail-in rebate, ninety days after the Vonage service is activated.

Vonage Service To Retail At CompUSA Outlets

PR News --December 21, 2004

By Staff

Vonage Tuesday signed on CompUSA to sell its Net phone service through 229 stores run by the retail chain.

With this, the total number of outlets that retail Vonage's voice over Internet protocol phone service will pass 8,000 in North America, the company said. The calls are cheaper than traditional phone calls since they bypass regulatory fees levied on traditional wireline networks.

Users who already have a high-speed Internet connection can get the Vonage service at CompUSA by purchasing a wireless Net access device sold by Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems.

Voice Over IP - Is This The Real Deal?

PR News --January 1, 2005

By Staff

Vonage, the voice over IP provider with 300,000 users in North America since its launch in 2002, is now making its entry into the UK market.

Just as you would expect from a VoIP provider, Vonage says call rates will be lower than incumbent BT's - although as TTM went to press it had yet to give tariff details for its planned launch on 28 December.

But analysts are sceptical that Vonage's retail models will work as well in Europe. Many think it could be hard-pressed to compete on price alone. Incumbents and alternative operators in Europe are already offering competitive calling bundles for national calls, and these rates could come down even lower if they are threatened by VoIP upstarts.

"Vonage will find that network costs are getting very low, and incumbents like us can offer good pricing bundles to compete with the prices of VoIP," says David McRedmond, commercial director for Republic of Ireland incumbent eircom.

Vonage Moves To Video

PR News --December 23, 2004

By Staff

Internet phone service provider Vonage will sell videophones and a videophone service sometime before the end of March.

An exact date for the service's debut ? first quarter 2005 ? or the pricing details were released.

For a general idea on what a Vonage videophone service might cost, one can look to videophone provider Packet8, which sells unlimited video calling for $30 a month. Packet8 videophones, which have embedded cameras to capture the caller's image, come heavily rebated.

Vonage has partnered with broadband video equipment maker Viseon to develop the videophone. Vonage will release a videophone that resembles the VisiFone II, a phone developed by broadband video equipment maker Viseon. The VisiFone II debuts in January.

VoIP Pioneer Predicts A Roiling 2005 For IP Telephony

PR News --December 21, 2004

By W. David Gardner

Open source software communications will begin to influence the VoIP market in a big way next year, according to VoIP pioneer Jeff Pulver, who released his predictions for the roiling Internet telephoning market for 2005 on Monday.

Pulver, who heads the industry standard VON (Voice on the Net) conferences and publications, said open source software for VoIP PBXs is progressing at a rapid rate. "It will continue to gain momentum, the effects of which will be felt in the next 12 to 18 months," he said.

In his predictions for 2005, Pulver also said some VoIP start-ups will flame out while others will launch IPOs. In addition, he said governments around the world will take harder looks at regulating VoIP and, in the U.S., Congress will consider rewriting the Telecommunications Act of 1996 with an eye to VoIP.

The Internet Is Calling

PR News --December 20, 2004

By David P. Willis

Debbie Thompson of Freehold Township wasn't sold on the idea of using the Internet to make telephone calls.

"I didn't trust it. I thought you had to talk on your computer," said Thompson, 28. But her husband, John, convinced her, and now they are customers of Vonage, an Edison-based company that provides Internet telephone service.

"We got it because the phone bills were just so high we just couldn't take it anymore," said Thompson. Their monthly telephone bill, once about $95, is now about $20.

Americans Flood Online Stores As Holidays Approach

PR News --December 20, 2004

By Staff

RESTON, Va., Dec 20, 2004 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- comScore Media Metrix today released its monthly analysis of online consumer behavior, which reported that 128 million consumers visited sites in the Retail category in November 2004, representing fully 80 percent of the U.S. Internet population. Retail sites, such as those operated by KB Toys, Best Buy and Toys"R"Us, dominated this month's top gaining properties ranking, with monthly increases ranging from 45 percent to 155 percent.

"Consumers will spend more than $15 billion online this holiday season, but the Web's impact on retail extends far beyond its application as a direct selling medium," said Peter Daboll, president and CEO of comScore Media Metrix. "Tens of millions of Americans use the Internet to research products that they ultimately buy offline, helping make the shopping process more efficient and convenient than ever before."

Broadband Provider Expands Into Q-C Market

PR News --December 17, 2004

By Jennifer DeWitt

Vonage Holdings Corp., a broadband telephone company, has expanded service to the Quad-City area as part of a launch that broadens its reach across Iowa.

Vonage, based in Edison, N.J., provides phone service that runs over a high-speed Internet connection but allows the user to make calls from a regular home phone. “If you have high-speed Internet with an existing ISP or cable company, you can access Vonage,” said Mike Tribolet, the company’s executive vice president of operations.

Vonage’s advantage, he said, is it offers free unlimited local and long distance calling while providing popular phone features such as call waiting, call forwarding and voicemail for a flat monthly rate starting at $24.99. An introductory package is available for $14.99 a month.
