Declining To Go The Long Distance

December 26, 2004

By Griff Witte

Long distance doesn't mean much to a 17-year-old who can call friends in a dozen states and never have to worry how much it will cost, as long as she doesn't go over her wireless minutes.

And that, more than anything, is why the whole concept of long distance is on its way out.

Though the disappearance of long distance has played out gradually, 2004 was a signal year in its demise.
In July, AT&T Corp. -- the once venerable Ma Bell herself --
announced the company would stop marketing long-distance service to consumers. Then, bloodied by Federal Communications Commission decisions that went against them, longtime long-distance giants MCI Inc. and Sprint Corp. quietly followed AT&T's lead. When Sprint announced this month it would merge with Reston-based Nextel Communications Inc., consumer long-distance service was barely mentioned. The deal was all about wireless.

For today's long-distance caller, the choices are many: a bundled wireline plan from one of the major phone companies; Internet calling with an upstart like Vonage; a cell phone plan that measures minutes, not miles; even service through cable TV and satellite companies.

Make Your Pirate Habits Walk The Plank; Go Legit

December 26, 2004

Dear Propeller Head: I'm always looking for a way to stick it to the man. Do you know if Voice over IP is a good way to reduce my phone bill? - A. Hoffman

A: Dude, if you would stop using outdated expressions I might be able help you out. Please cease and desist with the stick it to the man comments. It makes me think that you finally saw School of Rock! I mean, dude.

For those who don't already know, with Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, instead of plugging your phone into a regular phone jack, you plug it into a special adapter that then connects to your high-speed Internet connection.

As you pointed out, the primary reason people are looking into VoIP is to cut costs. In fact, many VoIP services will give you a lot more bang for your buck. Most features such as Caller ID and voice mail that cost extra with traditional phone service are free. Also, VoIP has features that regular phone service could only dream of.

Companies Cast Wide Web To Offer Internet Phoning

December 25, 2004

PALM BEACH, Fla. - Every new technology has found its way to the American home, and it's the strategy that Vonage Inc. and AT&T Corp. are following to make phone calls over the Internet as ubiquitous as traditional land-line service.

Vonage, the largest player in the so-called Voice-over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, market, began offering its trendy phone technology in major electronics and office supply retail outlets this year.

Assembly (And Understanding) Required
Often-Baffling Instruction Booklets Give Frustrated Users An Unwelcome Workout

December 25, 2004

By Marlon Manuel

The new computers, toy cars, digital cameras and assembly-required furniture are all unwrapped, unsheathed and unboxed. Don't mean to ruin your Christmas — but the next step is to read the owner's manual.

Ahhhhhrrrrrrggg!

Who decided to make "insert slot A into tab B" — in Taiwanese, no less — required reading when all you want to do is find the "on" button? Why suffer through tales of horror on such a joyous day?

Some companies have heard the cries of agony and produce colorful, easier-to-read, pared-down volumes. But there are still legions of manufacturers publishing manuals as cryptic as Stonehenge, and just as large.

Can You Answer The Computer, Hon?

December 24, 2004

By Matthew Ingram

You may have seen ads for services offering cheap ''Internet phone calls,'' or heard someone bragging about how little they pay for long distance because they have an Internet phone, and wondered what they were talking about.

The technical term for it is VoIP, which stands for ''voice over Internet protocol,'' but most people just call it Internet phone service or Internet telephony. So should you jump on the Internet phone bandwagon, too? That depends.

Although it has only just hit the mainstream, Internet phone calling has been around for almost a decade. But early versions worked only between two people using the same piece of software, and there were quality problems that sometimes made it sound like you were talking to someone on the International Space Station.

Interview: Jeffrey Citron CEO Vonage

December 23, 2004

By Nathan Allen

Jeffrey Citron is CEO of Vonage. Vonage remains competitive despite big cable and telephone companies entering the market. Vonage has over 300,000 subscribers to date and is growing more rapidly than any other residential VoIP provider.

I was lucky enough to be able to conduct a phone interview with him recently. Here are the results.

With your phenomenal growth how do you intend to continue to supply timely support to your customers?

Vonage is hiring and training 600 new support staff, which are all going to be based in the USA. There average hold time is down to an average of 2 minutes with a goal of 90 seconds not far off.

Arnold, Vonage: 'Ready To Go' In TV Salvo

PR News --December 23, 2004

By David Gianatasio

BOSTON - Havas' Arnold is preparing to break its first campaign for Internet phone company Vonage since winning the account in October following a review.

The client said three TV spots are set to debut on Dec. 26. They show people doing "stupid things," such as engaging in dangerous snowmobile and skiing stunts. Supers read: "People do stupid things. Like pay too much for phone service. So switch to Vonage."

At the close of each 30-second spot, a voiceover says, "If you've got broadband, you're ready to go." There is no tagline.

The budget is approximately $75 million, with about half of that amount earmarked for online initiatives.
